Theiconv() function converts the sequence of characters from one code set, in the array specified byinbuf, into a sequence of correspondingcharacters in another code set, in the array specified byoutbuf. Thecode sets are those specified in theiconv_open( ) call that returned the conversiondescriptor,cd. Theinbuf argument points to a variable that points tothe first character in the input buffer andinbytesleft indicates the numberof bytes to the end of the buffer to be converted. Theoutbuf argument points to a variable that points to the first availablebyte in the output buffer andoutbytesleft indicates the number of theavailable bytes to the end of the buffer.
For state-dependent encodings, the conversion descriptorcd is placed into its initialshift state by a call for whichinbuf is a null pointer,or for whichinbuf points to a null pointer. Wheniconv() is calledin this way, and ifoutbuf is not a null pointeror a pointer to a null pointer, andoutbytesleft points to apositive value,iconv() will place, into the output buffer, the bytesequence to change the output buffer to its initial shift state. Ifthe output buffer is not large enough to hold the entire resetsequence,iconv() will fail and seterrno toE2BIG. Subsequent callswithinbuf as other than a null pointer or a pointer to anull pointer cause the conversion to take place from the currentstate of the conversion descriptor.
If a sequence of input bytes does not form a valid characterin the specified code set, conversion stops after the previous successfullyconverted character. If the input buffer ends with an incomplete character orshift sequence, conversion stops after the previous successfully converted bytes. If the outputbuffer is not large enough to hold the entire converted input, conversionstops just prior to the input bytes that would cause the outputbuffer to overflow. The variable pointed to byinbuf is updated topoint to the byte following the last byte successfully used in the conversion. The value pointed to byinbytesleft is decremented to reflect thenumber of bytes still not converted in the input buffer. The variablepointed to byoutbuf is updated to point to the byte followingthe last byte of converted output data. The value pointed to byoutbytesleftis decremented to reflect the number of bytes still available in theoutput buffer. For state-dependent encodings, the conversion descriptor is updated to reflectthe shift state in effect at the end of the last successfullyconverted byte sequence.
Ificonv() encounters a character in the input buffer that islegal, but for which an identical character does not exist in thetarget code set,iconv() performs an implementation-defined conversion on this character.
The default conversion behavior mentioned above can be modified if one ormore of the conversion behavior modification indicators is specified and such conversionbehavior modifications are supported by the implementation of the correspondingiconv codeconversion. Seeiconv_open(3C) andiconvctl(C).
Theiconv() function updates the variables pointed to by the argumentsto reflect the extent of the conversion and returns the number ofnon-identical conversions performed. If the entire string in the input bufferis converted, the value pointed to byinbytesleft will be0. Ifthe input conversion is stopped due to any conditions mentioned above, thevalue pointed to byinbytesleft will be non-zero anderrnois set to indicate the condition. If an error occursiconv()returns(size_t)-1 and setserrno to indicate the error.
Theiconv() function will fail if:
Input conversion stopped due to an input byte that does not belong to the input code set.
Input conversion stopped due to lack of space in the output buffer.
Input conversion stopped due to an incomplete character or shift sequence at the end of the input buffer.
Theiconv() function may fail if:
Thecd argument is not a valid open conversion descriptor.
