char *ctermid_r(char *s);
Thectermid() function generates the path name of the controlling terminal forthe current process and stores it in a string.
Ifs is a null pointer, the string is stored in aninternal static area whose address is returned and whose contents are overwrittenat the next call toctermid(). Otherwise,s is assumed to pointto a character array of at leastL_ctermid elements. The path nameis placed in this array and the value ofs is returned.The constantL_ctermid is defined in the header<stdio.h>.
Thectermid_r() function behaves asctermid() except that ifs is anull pointer, the function returnsNULL.
The difference betweenctermid() andttyname(3C) is thatttyname() must be passeda file descriptor and returns the actual name of the terminal associated withthat file descriptor, whilectermid() returns a string (/dev/tty) that will referto the terminal if used as a file name. Thettyname() functionis useful only if the process already has at least one fileopen to a terminal.
Thectermid() function is unsafe in multithreaded applications. Thectermid_r() functionis MT-Safe and should be used instead.
When compiling multithreaded applications, the_REENTRANT flag must be defined onthe compile line. This flag should be used only with multithreadedapplications.
