- open/close a message catalog

Thecatopen() function opens a message catalog and returns a message catalogdescriptor.name specifies the name of the message catalog to be opened.Ifname contains a “/”, thenname specifies a complete pathname forthe message catalog; otherwise, the environment variableNLSPATH is used and/usr/lib/locale/locale/LC_MESSAGES must exist. IfNLSPATH does not exist in the environment, or ifa message catalog cannot be opened in any of the paths specifiedbyNLSPATH, then the default path/usr/lib/locale/locale/LC_MESSAGES is used. In the “C”locale,catopen() will always succeed without checking the default search path.
The names of message catalogs and their location in the filesystem canvary from one system to another. Individual applications can choose to nameor locate message catalogs according to their own special needs. A mechanismis therefore required to specify where the catalog resides.
TheNLSPATH variable provides both the location of message catalogs, in theform of a search path, and the naming conventions associated with messagecatalog files. For example:

The metacharacter% introduces a substitution field, where%L substitutes the currentsetting of either theLANG environment variable, if the value ofoflagis0, or theLC_MESSAGES category, if the value ofoflag isNL_CAT_LOCALE, and%N substitutes the value of thename parameterpassed tocatopen(). Thus, in the above example,catopen() will search in/nlslib/$LANG/name.cat, ifoflag is0, or in/nlslib/{LC_MESSAGES}/name.cat, ifoflag isNL_CAT_LOCALE.
TheNLSPATH variable will normally be set up on a system widebasis (in/etc/profile) and thus makes the location and naming conventions associatedwith message catalogs transparent to both programs and users.
The full set of metacharacters is:
The value of the name parameter passed tocatopen().
The value ofLANG orLC_MESSAGES.
The value of thelanguage element ofLANG orLC_MESSAGES.
The value of theterritory element ofLANG orLC_MESSAGES.
The value of thecodeset element ofLANG orLC_MESSAGES.
A single %.
TheLANG environment variable provides the ability to specify the user's requirementsfor native languages, local customs and character set, as an ASCII stringin the form
LANG=language_territory.codeset[@modifier]
A user who speaks German as it is spoken in Austria andhas a terminal which operates in UTF-8 codeset, would want the settingof the LANG variable to be
LANG=de_AT.UTF-8
With this setting it should be possible for that user to findany relevant catalogs should they exist.
Should theLANG variable not be set, the value ofLC_MESSAGES asreturned bysetlocale() is used. If this isNULL, the defaultpath as defined in <nl_types.h> is used.
A message catalogue descriptor remains valid in a process until that processcloses it, or a successful call to one of theexec functions.A change in the setting of theLC_MESSAGES category may invalidate existingopen catalogues.
If a file descriptor is used to implement message catalogue descriptors, theFD_CLOEXEC flag will be set; see <fcntl.h>.
If the value ofoflag argument is0, theLANG environmentvariable is used to locate the catalogue without regard to theLC_MESSAGES category. If theoflag argument isNL_CAT_LOCALE, theLC_MESSAGES category isused to locate the message catalogue.
If the value ofLANG orLC_MESSAGES that is used in theprocess of locating message catalog is a canonical locale name to obsoletedSolaris locale names as described inlocale_alias(5) and the above mentioned ordinarylocations with the value do not yield a message catalog, for abetter backward compatibility,catopen() additionally looks for its message catalog using theobsoleted Solaris locale names as the additional locale names to check on within place of the value.
If the value ofLANG orLC_MESSAGES that is used in theprocess of locating message catalog is an accepted and supported locale namealias to a canonical locale name that is supported as described inlocale_alias(5) and the above mentioned ordinary locations with the value donot yield a message catalog,catopen() additionally looks for its message catalogusing the canonical locale name.
Thecatclose() function closes the message catalog identified bycatd. If afile descriptor is used to implement the typenl_catd, that file descriptorwill be closed.
Upon successful completion,catopen() returns a message catalog descriptor for use on subsequent calls tocatgets() andcatclose(). Otherwise it returns(nl_catd) -1.
Upon successful completion,catclose() returns 0. Otherwise it returns -1 and setserrno to indicate the error.
Thecatopen() function may fail if:
Search permission is denied for the component of the path prefix of the message catalogue or read permission is denied for the message catalogue.
There areOPEN_MAX file descriptors currently open in the calling process.
The length of the pathname of the message catalogue exceedsPATH_MAX, or a pathname component is longer thanNAME_MAX.
Pathname resolution of a symbolic link produced an intermediate result whose length exceedsPATH_MAX.
Too many files are currently open in the system.
The message catalogue does not exist or thename argument points to an empty string.
Insufficient storage space is available.
A component of the path prefix of the message catalogue is not a directory.
Thecatclose() function may fail if:
The catalogue descriptor is not valid.
Thecatclose() function was interrupted by a signal.
Thecatopen() andcatclose() functions can be used safely in multithreaded applications,as long assetlocale(3C) is not being called to change the locale.
