Thestrtol() function converts the initial portion of the string pointed tobystr to a typelong int representation.
Thestrtoll() function converts the initial portion of the string pointed tobystr to a typelong long representation.
Both functions first decompose the input string into three parts: an initial,possibly empty, sequence of white-space characters (as specified byisspace(3C)); a subject sequenceinterpreted as an integer represented in some radix determined by the valueofbase; and a final string of one or more unrecognized characters,including the terminating null byte of the input string. They then attemptto convert the subject sequence to an integer and return the result.
If the value ofbase is 0, the expected form of thesubject sequence is that of a decimal constant, octal constant or hexadecimalconstant, any of which may be preceded by a + or -sign. A decimal constant begins with a non-zero digit, and consists ofa sequence of decimal digits. An octal constant consists of the prefix 0optionally followed by a sequence of the digits 0 to 7 only.A hexadecimal constant consists of the prefix 0x or 0X followed bya sequence of the decimal digits and letters a (or A) tof (or F) with values 10 to 15 respectively.
If the value ofbase is between 2 and 36, the expectedform of the subject sequence is a sequence of letters and digitsrepresenting an integer with the radix specified bybase, optionally preceded bya + or - sign. The letters from a (or A) to z(or Z) inclusive are ascribed the values 10 to 35; only letterswhose ascribed values are less than that ofbase are permitted. Ifthe value ofbase is 16, the characters 0x or 0X mayoptionally precede the sequence of letters and digits, following the sign if present.
The subject sequence is defined as the longest initial subsequence of theinput string, starting with the first non-white-space character, that is of theexpected form. The subject sequence contains no characters if the input stringis empty or consists entirely of white-space characters, or if the first non-white-spacecharacter is other than a sign or a permissible letter or digit.
If the subject sequence has the expected form and the value ofbase is 0, the sequence of characters starting with the first digitis interpreted as an integer constant. If the subject sequence has theexpected form and the value ofbase is between 2 and 36, itis used as the base for conversion, ascribing to each letter itsvalue as given above. If the subject sequence begins with a minussign, the value resulting from the conversion is negated. A pointer tothe final string is stored in the object pointed to byendptr, providedthatendptr is not a null pointer.
In other than the POSIX locale, additional implementation-dependent subject sequence forms maybe accepted.
If the subject sequence is empty or does not have the expectedform, no conversion is performed; the value ofstr is stored inthe object pointed to byendptr, provided thatendptr is not anull pointer.
Except for behavior on error,atol() is equivalent to:strtol(str, (char **)NULL, 10).
Except for behavior on error,atoll() is equivalent to:strtoll(str, (char **)NULL, 10).
Except for behavior on error,atoi() is equivalent to:(int) strtol(str, (char **)NULL, 10).
If the value cannot be represented, the behavior is undefined.
Thelltostr() function returns a pointer to the string represented by thelonglongvalue. Theendptr argument is assumed to point to thebyte following a storage area into which the decimal representation ofvalue isto be placed as a string. Thelltostr() function convertsvalueto decimal and produces the string, and returns a pointer tothe beginning of the string. No leading zeros are produced, and noterminating null is produced. The low-order digit of the result always occupies memorypositionendptr-1. The behavior oflltostr() is undefined ifvalueis negative. A single zero digit is produced ifvalueis 0.
Theulltostr() function is similar tolltostr() except thatvalue is anunsigned long long.
Upon successful completion,strtol(),strtoll(),atol(),atoll(), andatoi() return the convertedvalue, if any. If no conversion could be performed,strtol() andstrtoll()return0 anderrno may be set toEINVAL.
If the correct value is outside the range of representable values,strtol()returnsLONG_MAX orLONG_MIN andstrtoll() returnsLLONG_MAX orLLONG_MIN (according tothe sign of the value), anderrno is set toERANGE.
Upon successful completion,lltostr() andulltostr() return a pointer to the convertedstring.

Because 0,LONG_MIN,LONG_MAX,LLONG_MIN, andLLONG_MAX are returned on error andare also valid returns on success, an application wishing to check forerror situations should seterrno to 0, call the function, then checkerrnoand if it is non-zero, assume an error has occurred.
Thestrtol() function no longer accepts values greater thanLONG_MAX orLLONG_MAXas valid input. Usestrtoul(3C) instead.
Calls toatoi() andatol() might be faster than corresponding calls tostrtol(), and calls toatoll() might be faster than corresponding calls tostrtoll(). However, applications should not use theatoi(),atol(), oratoll() functions unlessthey know the value represented by the argument will be in rangefor the corresponding result type.
