Thestrftime(),ascftime(), andcftime() functions place bytes into the array pointedto bys as controlled by the string pointed to byformat.Theformat string consists of zero or more conversion specifications and ordinary characters. A conversion specification consists of a '%' (percent) character, an optionalflag character, an optional field width, and one or twoterminating conversion characters that determine the conversion specification's behavior. All ordinary characters(including the terminating null byte) are copied unchanged into the array pointedto bys. If copying takes place between objects that overlap, thebehavior is undefined. Forstrftime(), no more thanmaxsize bytes are placedinto the array.
Ifformat is(char *)0, then the locale's default format is used. Forstrftime() the default format is the same as%c; forcftime() andascftime() the default format is the same as%C.cftime() andascftime() firsttry to use the value of the environment variableCFTIME, and ifthat is undefined or empty, the default format is used.
Each conversion specification is replaced by appropriate characters as described in thefollowing list. The appropriate characters are determined by theLC_TIME category ofthe program's locale and by the values contained in the structure pointedto bytimeptr forstrftime() andascftime(), and by the time representedbyclock forcftime(). Supported optional flag characters and optional field widthare described at the end of the section.

If a conversion specification does not correspond to any of the aboveor to any of the modified conversion specifications listed below, the behavioris undefined and0 is returned.
The difference between%U and%W (and also between modified conversion specifications%OU and%OW) lies in which day is counted as the firstof the week. Week number 1 is the first week in Januarystarting with a Sunday for%U or a Monday for%W. Week number0 contains those days before the first Sunday or Monday in Januaryfor%U and%W, respectively.
Some conversion specifications can be modified by theE andO modifiersto indicate that an alternate format or specification should be used ratherthan the one normally used by the unmodified conversion specification. If thealternate format or specification does not exist in the current locale, the behaviorwill be as if the unmodified specification were used.

By default, the output ofstrftime(),cftime(), andascftime() appear in U.S.English. The user can request that the output ofstrftime(),cftime(), orascftime() be in a specific language by setting theLC_TIME category usingsetlocale().
Local time zone information is used as thoughtzset(3C) were called.
The following flag characters are accepted and supported to be compatible withsome other operating systems:
If applicable, convert the case of the alphabetic characters to the other case, i.e., uppercase to lowercase or lowercase to uppercase, while trying to preserve the first so-called title case character in the conversion to uppercase.
Do not pad anything for numeric values.
Pad left with zeros for numeric values even in cases where the conversion character used with is specified with in the Description section such that digits are preceded by a space or a blank character.
If applicable, convert lowercase characters into uppercase characters.
Pad left with space (0x20) characters for numeric values.
When an optional field width is specified before the conversion characters, theresultant characters are padded at the left with appropriate padding characters ifthe field width is bigger than the width of the resultant characters.If the field width value specified is smaller than or equal to theactual width of the resultant characters, the resultant characters is presented withoutany truncation or change in length as if there is no fieldwidth value specified.
Thestrftime(),cftime(), andascftime() functions return the number of characters placedinto the array pointed to bys, not including the terminating nullcharacter. If the total number of resulting characters including the terminating null characteris more thanmaxsize,strftime() returns0 and the contents of thearray are indeterminate.
Example 1 An example of thestrftime() function.
The following example illustrates the use ofstrftime() for the POSIX locale.It shows what the string instr would look like if thestructure pointed to bytmptr contains the values corresponding to Thursday, August 28,1986 at 12:44:36.
strftime(str, strsize, "%A %b %d %j", tmptr)
This results instr containing “Thursday Aug 28 240”.
Example 2 Using flag and field width at conversion specification.
Assuming the data structure pointed to by tmptr has the values correspondingto Sunday, December 5, 2009 at 12:00:00 and the current locale isPOSIX, with the following:

The result instr would be “Day: SUNDAY” whereSunday is converted to uppercase while preserving the initial title case characterand with four space (0x20) characters padded at left.

The conversion specification for%V was changed in the Solaris 7 release.This change was based on the public review draft of the ISOC9x standard at that time. Previously, the specification stated that if theweek containing 1 January had fewer than four days in the new year,it became week 53 of the previous year. The ISO C9x standardcommittee subsequently recognized that that specification had been incorrect.
The conversion specifications for%g,%G,%Eg,%EG, and%Og were addedin the Solaris 7 release. This change was based on thepublic review draft of the ISO C9x standard at that time. Thesespecifications are evolving. If the ISO C9x standard is finalized with adifferent conclusion, these specifications will change to conform to the ISO C9xstandard decision.
The conversion specification for%u was changed in the Solaris 8 release.This change was based on the XPG4 specification.
If using the%Z specifier andzoneinfo timezones and if the inputdate is outside the range 20:45:52 UTC, December 13, 1901 to03:14:07 UTC, January 19, 2038, the timezone name may not be correct.
The conversion specifications for%+,%P,%s,%OB, and%OV and alsooptional flag characters and optional field width were added in the Solaris11 and OpenSolaris releases for a better compatibility with other operating systems. Thecurrent form of%OV is also specified in the Single Unix Specification,Version 2.
