This specification updates:
WebCGM2.0 OASIS Standard (andW3CRecommendation)
This specification, when completed, willbe identical in technical content to:
WebCGM 2.1 W3C Recommendation,available at http://www.w3.org/TR/...(tbd).../ .
Computer Graphics Metafile (CGM) is an ISO standard, defined by ISO/IEC 8632:1999, for the interchange of 2D vector and mixedvector/raster graphics. WebCGM is a profile of CGM, which adds Web linkingand is optimized for Web applications in technical illustration, electronicdocumentation, geophysical data visualization, and similar fields. Firstpublished (1.0) in 1999, WebCGM unifies potentially diverse approaches to CGMutilization in Web document applications. It therefore represents asignificant interoperability agreement amongst major users and implementersof the ISO CGM standard.
The present version, WebCGM 2.1, refines and completesthe features of the major WebCGM 2.0 release. WebCGM 2.0 added a DOM (API)specification for programmatic access to WebCGM objects, a specification ofan XML Companion File (XCF) architecture, and extended the graphical andintelligent content of WebCGM 1.0.
The design criteria for WebCGM aim at a balance betweengraphical expressive power on the one hand, and simplicity andimplementability on the other. A small but powerful set of standardizedmetadata elements supports the functionalities of hyperlinking and documentnavigation, picture structuring and layering, and enabling search and queryof WebCGM picture content.
This document was last revised or approved by the OASISCGM Open WebCGM TC on the above date. The level of approval is also listedabove. Check the current location noted above for possible later revisions ofthis document. This document is updated periodically on no particularschedule.
The final version of this specification is to be producedjointly byOASIS andW3C and published simultaneously as an OASISStandard and a W3C Recommendation. The two documents will have identicalcontent except for cover page and formatting differences as appropriate tothe two organizations.
