Medfield College is named after the town of Medfield,Massachusetts. According to town historians, friends ofWalt Disney lived there, and he would visit them on occasion, landing his plane on a private airstrip on their property. Portions of the airstrip are still present today. The cornerstone of Medfield Middle School, formerly Medfield High School, has a quote from Walt Disney inscribed on it: "Our greatest natural resource is in the minds of our children."
TheFight Song of Medfield College, composed by Richard andRobert B. Sherman, is heard during the beginning credit sequence ofThe Absent-Minded Professor.
The Medfield College scenes in bothThe Absent-Minded Professor andSon of Flubber were filmed on the campus of Pomona College in Claremont,California. Some of the football field scenes inSon of Flubber were filmed at Burbank High School, as evidenced by a banner reading Burbank High School seen in the background.
The Medfield College scenes in the three above-mentioned Dexter Riley films were filmed on the Disney Studios backlot inBurbank,California. Some Medfield College scenes in the 1997Flubber remake were shot at San Jose State University.
This1997 film was a remake of the Absent Minded Professor starringRobin Williams. It had him working as a professor at Medfield and at one point using Flubber on the seals of the school basketball team's shoes to rig the game in their favour.
The college was also briefly referenced in the2015 comic seriesDisney Kingdoms: Figment 2. Here the Scientifica Lucida is a university central to the plot which comes to have acampus inFlorida. One of the university deans mentions Dr. Brainard coming to work at the location, visiting from Medfield.
The Epcot attraction Journey into Imagination with Figment makes a great number of references to science-fiction comedy Disney films. As a result it holds a good number of references to Medfield College in the queue, including a jacket for the college and an office for Dean Higgins.
