He attended Lamar University for two years before, in1980, transferring to the renownedCalifornia Institute of the Arts, where he studied animation and filmmaking. He was known for being an artist in a variety of capacities on many animated movies.

ForDisney, he served as a storyboard artist for several films listed below. He also directed the2011Touchstone Pictures filmGnomeo & Juliet.

Outside of Disney, he directedSpirit: Stallion of the Cimarron,Shrek 2,Smurfs: The Lost Village, andUglyDolls.

On June 26, 2020, Asbury died of complications of abdominal cancer at the age of 60.

After his death, Asbury's son, Kevin, voiced atroll fromDisenchanted in an uncredited role, replacedFred Tatasciore and Wilbur Pauley.
