First on Melbourne's list in1939, Neenan had been the best and fairest player in the CYMS competition the previous year and played for their state representative team. After playing in theSeconds premiership he debuted late in1940.

A forward and relief ruckman, Neenan was a fringe player throughout two premiership seasons and moved to South Melbourne halfway through1942 where he added another three games to his career tally late in the season - including a semi final. Despite playing in three wins during his South career he was dropped before their losing Preliminary Final and didn't play VFL football again.
