  • The Ministry of Health (MISAN) is the department of the Government of Spain responsible for proposing and executing the government policy on health, planning and providing healthcare as well as the exercise of the powers of the General State Administration to assure citizens the right to health protection. The Ministry is headquartered in the Paseo del Prado in Madrid, opposite the Prado Museum. Healthcare in Spain is provided by the National Health System, a decentralized organization composed by the regional health systems and the National Institute of Health Management, the health agency of the central government that provides health care to the autonomous cities of Ceuta and Melilla. According to Eurostat (2017 data), Spain spends 8.9% of GDP on health, approximately $104 billion (€86 billion). According to the Annual Report of the National Health System 2019, the total expenditure of the Spanish health system in 2018 was 109.9 billion euros (77.4 billion corresponding to the public sector and 32.5 billion to the private sector). This represents 2,351 euros per capita and an expenditure of 9.1% of the Spanish GDP. As of 2018, regarding human resources, the NHS had 780,377 professionals. Of these, 188,166 are medical professionals, 274,633 nursing professionals, and 317,578 are other types of health professionals. The Ministry is headed by the Minister of Health, who is appointed by the King of Spain at request of the Prime Minister. The Minister is assisted by three main officials, the Secretary of State for Health, the Secretary-General for Digital Health, Information and Innovation of the National Health System and the Under Secretary of Health.   • El Ministerio de Sanidad (MISAN) de España es el Departamento de la Administración General del Estado que asume la propuesta y ejecución de la política del Gobierno de la Nación en materia de salud, de planificación y asistencia sanitaria, así como el ejercicio de las competencias de la Administración para asegurar a los ciudadanos el derecho a la protección de la salud.​ Durante la mayor parte de la historia de este país, las competencias sanitarias estuvieron en el Ministerio del Interior. A finales de 1936 se crea por primera vez el Ministerio de Sanidad,​ que a los pocos días pasó a denominarse Ministerio de Sanidad y Asistencia Social​ y su primer titulara fue Federica Montseny.​ Este departamento apenas duró unos meses y no se recuperó un Ministerio propio para estas competencias hasta la transición democrática, en 1977;​ desde entonces, no ha desaparecido. En España, la salud pública es una competencia descentralizada y cuya gestión corresponde a las comunidades autónomas. Esto hace que el Sistema Nacional de Salud se componga de 18 servicios sanitarios, uno por cada comunidad autónoma, más el Instituto Nacional de Gestión Sanitaria (INGESA), que presta servicios sanitarios a las ciudades autónomas de Ceuta y Melilla. De acuerdo con el Informe Anual del Sistema Nacional de Salud 2020–21, el gasto total del sistema sanitario español en el año 2019 ascendió a los 115.458 millones de euros (81.590 millones correspondientes al sector público y 33.868 millones al sector privado).​ Esto supone 2.451 euros per cápita y un gasto del 9,3 % del Producto Interior Bruto (PIB) nacional.​ Asimismo, el sistema sanitario español cuenta con 3.051 centros de salud, 10.045 consultorios de atención primaria, 777 hospitales (467 públicos) y 153.265 camas hospitalarias (138.861 en funcionamiento; 112.225 de ellas en centros públicos).​ En cuanto a los recursos humanos, el sector sanitario a fecha de 2019 contaba con 812.764 profesionales. De ellos, 207.565 eran profesionales de la medicina, 277.633 profesionales de la enfermería y 327.566 otro tipo de profesionales del ámbito de la salud.​ (es)
