Κανένα άλλο πρόσωπο δεν μπορεί να κατέλθει ως υποψήφιος. Στη συνέχεια ο πρόεδρος εκλέγεται από τους πολίτες του Κιριμπάτι μεταξύ των υποψηφίων. Με βάση το Σύνταγμα του 1979, προβλέπεται η διεξαγωγή ελεύθερων εκλογών, κάθε τετραετία. Δικαίωμα ψήφου στις εκλογές έχουν όσες και όσοι είναι ηλικίας 18 ετών και άνω. They consist in the national elections of the Maneaba ni Maungatabu from whom is then elected the Beretitenti, shortly after, by the people. They are also local elections of the Councils (one council in each inhabited island and 3 councils in Tarawa). Kiribati elects on national level a legislature and then a head of state - the president. The president is elected for a four-year term by the people. The House of Assembly (Maneaba ni Maungatabu) has 45 members, 44 elected for a four-year term in single-seat and multi-seat constituencies, and 1 delegate from Rabi Island representing Banaba. The initial number was of 35 in 1978, because the first elections have been held one year before independence in 1979, . Kiribati has a Westminster system two-party system, which means that there are two dominant political parties, since 2020, but the political parties, that exist since 1965, are not central to political life. Kiribati has an informal party system, and the website of the House of Assembly of Kiribati says the following on the topic: The parties are loose groupings rather than disciplined blocks, with little or no structure. Le parlement, la Maneaba ni Maungatabu, composé de 44 députés élus et de 2 députés désignés, est élu selon un scrutin à deux tours. Ensuite, en son sein, il choisit 3 ou 4 députés pour se présenter à la présidentielle qui a lieu également au suffrage universel direct. Les avant-dernières élections ont eu lieu les 22 et 30 août 2007 et ont permis l'élection des députés suivants : * indépendants 19 (6 au premier tour, 13 au second) ; * Pillars of the Truth (Boutokaan te koaua) 18 (10 au premier tour, 8 au second) ; * Protect the Maneaba (Mwaneaban te Mauri) 7 députés (2 au premier tour, 5 au second) ; * représentant des Banabans de Rabi : 1 député non élu ; * membre ex officio (l'Attorney General) : le garde des sceaux. Les élections suivantes (premier tour) ont eu lieu le vendredi 21 octobre 2011, les bureaux de vote ouvrant à 7 heures, heure locale. 138 candidats se sont disputé les 44 sièges disponibles. Avec 60 000 électeurs environ, Radio New Zealand International s'attendait à une assez faible participation dans ses informations du 16 octobre 2011.
