Entwickelt wurde das Triebwerk von der Firma Teledyne Continental Motors. Der erste IO-550 wurde 1983 ausgeliefert und das Modell wird aktuell noch gebaut. Beim IOF-550 handelt es sich um eine mit einer volldigitalen Triebwerkssteuerung der Firma Aerosance ausgerüsteten Version. Der TSIO-550 ist eine Version mit Doppelturbolader und der TSIOL-550 eine wassergekühlte Version. Im Gegensatz zu anderen Baureihen existiert in dieser keine Vergaservariante, die die Bezeichnung O-550 tragen würde. Daher handelt es sich beim IO-550 um das Basismodell. Die Baureihe IO-550 konkurriert mit der Baureihe IO-580 von Lycoming, bei der es sich ebenfalls um Sechs-Zylinder-Motoren mit ähnlicher Leistung und ähnlichem Gewicht handelt. (de)
- The Continental IO-550 engine is a large family of 9 liter fuel injected six-cylinder, horizontally opposed, air-cooled aircraft engines that were developed for use in light aircraft by Teledyne Continental Motors. The first IO-550 was delivered in 1983 and the type remains in production. The IOF-550 is an Aerosance FADEC equipped version of the same basic engine, the TSIO-550 is a dual turbocharged version and the TSIOL-550 is a liquid-cooled variant. There is no O-550 engine, which would be a carburetor-equipped variant, hence the base model is the IO-550. This engine family competes with the Lycoming IO-580 series which are also six-cylinder engines with similar power output and weight. (en)

O primeiro IO-550 foi entregue em 1983 e o modelo permanece em produção. O IOF-550 é uma versão equipada com FADEC (em inglês: Full Authority Digital Engine Control), o TSIO-550 é uma versão com turboalimentação dupla e o TSIOL-550 é uma versão com refrigeração à água. Não existe o motor O-550, que seria a versão equipada com carburador (seguindo a lógica de designações da Continental), logo, o motor base é o IO-550. Esta família compete com a série de motores que também são motores de seis cilindros com potências e pesos similares. (pt)
