After the strike ended in July, the TT races were re-organised to fit with the remaining events in the Grand Prix calendar and preceded the September Manx Grand Prix, meaning nearly a month of continuous disruption to everyday Isle of Man affairs and much concerted effort from the motorcycle trade and journalists together with the many volunteers and support workers. - Il Tourist Trophy fu la decima prova del motomondiale 1966, nonché la 48ª edizione della prova. Si svolse dal 28 agosto al 2 settembre 1966, in un periodo diverso dal solito a causa di scioperi dei marittimi britannici che ne avevo impedito l'effettuazione nei soliti mesi di maggio/giugno, e vi corsero tutte le classi disputate in singolo, nonché i sidecar. Gareggiarono per prime il 28 agosto la 250 e i sidecar, il 31 agosto si svolsero le gare della 350 e della 125, il 2 settembre quelle della 50 e della 500; tutte le prove si svolsero sul Circuito del Mountain. I vincitori furono: Mike Hailwood che si impose nella classe 500 e nella 250 in sella a Honda, Giacomo Agostini nella 350 su MV Agusta, Bill Ivy in 125 su Yamaha e Ralph Bryans in 50 su Honda; l'equipaggio svizzero/britannico Fritz Scheidegger/ si impose tra i sidecar. Anche in questa occasione, nelle prove e in gara vi furono vari incidenti di cui due mortali: decedettero , pilota della Kawasaki, e ; altri incidenti coinvolsero anche Derek Minter che non fu presente alla partenza e Tarquinio Provini per il quale invece fu il termine della carriera agonistica.
