Benjamin and the Silver Cup

1And he commandedthe steward of his house,saying,Fillthe men'ssacks[with] food,as much asthey cancarry,and putevery man'smoneyin his sack'smouth.2And putmy cup,the silvercup,in the sack'smouthof the youngest,and his cornmoney.And he didaccording to the wordthat Josephhad spoken.3As soon as the morningwas light,the menwere sent away,they and their asses.4[And] when they were gone outof the city,[and] not [yet] far off,Josephsaidunto his steward,Up,followafterthe men;and when thou dost overtakethem, sayunto them, Wherefore have ye rewardedevilfor good?5[Is] not this [it] in which my lorddrinketh,and whereby indeedhe divineth?ye have done evilin so doing.

6And he overtookthem, and he spakeunto them these samewords.7And they saidunto him, Wherefore saithmy lordthese words?God forbidthat thy servantsshould doaccording to this thing:8Behold, the money,which we foundin our sacks'mouths,we brought againunto thee out of the landof Canaan:how then should we stealout of thy lord'shousesilveror gold?9With whomsoever of thy servantsit be found,both let him die,and we also will be my lord'sbondmen.10And he said,Now also [let] it [be] according unto your words:he with whom it is foundshall be my servant;and ye shall be blameless.11Then they speedilytook downevery manhis sackto the ground,and openedevery manhis sack.12And he searched,[and] beganat the eldest,and leftat the youngest:and the cupwas foundin Benjamin'ssack.13Then they renttheir clothes,and ladedevery manhis ass,and returnedto the city.

14And Judahand his brethrencameto Joseph'shouse;for he [was] yet there: and they fellbefore himon the ground.15And Josephsaidunto them, What deed[is] this that ye have done?wot yenot that such a manas I can certainlydivine?16And Judahsaid,What shall we sayunto my lord?what shall we speak?or how shall we clear ourselves?Godhath found outthe iniquityof thy servants:behold, we [are] my lord'sservants,both we, and [he] alsowith whomthe cupis found.17And he said,God forbidthat I should doso:[but] the manin whose handthe cupis found,he shall be my servant;and as for you, get you upin peaceunto your father.

Judah Pleads for Benjamin

18Then Judahcame nearunto him, and said,Ohmy lord,let thy servant,I pray thee, speaka wordin my lord'sears,and let not thine angerburnagainst thy servant:for thou [art] even as Pharaoh.19My lordaskedhis servants,saying,Haveye a father,or a brother?20And we saidunto my lord,We havea father,an old man,and a childof his old age,a little one;and his brotheris dead,and he alone is leftof his mother,and his fatherlovethhim.21And thou saidstunto thy servants,Bring him downunto me, that I may setmine eyesupon him.22And we saidunto my lord,The ladcannotleavehis father:for [if] he should leavehis father,[his father] would die.23And thou saidstunto thy servants,Exceptyour youngestbrothercome downwith you, ye shall seemy faceno more.24And it came to pass when we came upunto thy servantmy father,we toldhim the wordsof my lord.25And our fathersaid,Go again,[and] buyus a littlefood.26And we said,We cannotgo down:if our youngestbrotherbewith us, then will we go down:for we maynot seethe man'sface,exceptour youngestbrother[be] with us.27And thy servantmy fathersaidunto us, Ye knowthat my wifebareme two[sons]:28And the onewent outfrom me, and I said,Surelyhe is torn in pieces;and I saw himnot since:29And if ye takethis also fromme,and mischiefbefall him,ye shall bring downmy gray hairswith sorrowto the grave.30Now therefore when I cometo thy servantmy father,and the lad[be] not with us; seeing that his lifeis bound upin the lad's life;31It shall come to pass, when he seeththat the lad[is] not [with us], that he will die:and thy servantsshall bring downthe gray hairsof thy servantour fatherwith sorrowto the grave.32For thy servantbecame suretyfor the laduntomy father,saying,If I bringhim not unto thee, then I shall bear the blameto my fatherfor ever.33Now therefore, I pray thee, let thy servantabideinstead of the lada bondmanto my lord;and let the ladgo upwith his brethren.34For howshall I go upto my father,and the lad[be] not with me? lest peradventure I seethe evilthat shall come onmy father.
