Ezekiel as Israel's Watchman

1Again the wordof the LORDcame unto me, saying,2Sonof man, speakto the childrenof thy people, and sayunto them, When I bringthe swordupon a land,if the peopleof the landtakeamanof their coasts, and sethim for their watchman:3If when he seeththe swordcomeupon the land,he blowthe trumpet, and warnthe people;4Then whosoeverheareththe soundof the trumpet, and taketh not warning;if the swordcome, and take him away, his bloodshall be upon his own head.5He heardthe soundof the trumpet, and took not warning;his bloodshall be upon him. But he that taketh warningshall deliverhis soul.6But if the watchmanseethe swordcome, and blownot the trumpet, and the peoplebe not warned;if the swordcome, and take[any] personfrom among them, he is taken awayin his iniquity;but his bloodwill I requireat the watchman'shand.

7So thou, O sonof man,I have setthee a watchmanunto the houseof Israel;therefore thou shalt hearthe wordat my mouth, and warnthem from me.8When I sayunto the wicked,O wicked[man], thou shalt surelydie;if thou dost not speakto warnthe wickedfrom his way, that wicked[man] shall diein his iniquity;but his bloodwill I requireat thine hand.9Nevertheless, if thou warnthe wickedof his wayto turnfrom it; if he do not turnfrom his way,he shall diein his iniquity;but thou hast deliveredthy soul.

The Message of the Watchman

10Therefore, O thou sonof man, speakunto the houseof Israel; Thus ye speak, saying,If our transgressionsand our sins[be] upon us, and we pine awayin them, how should we then live?11Sayunto them, [As] I live, saiththe LordGOD,I have no pleasurein the deathof the wicked;but that the wickedturnfrom his wayand live:turnye, turnye from your evilways;for why will ye die,O houseof Israel?12Therefore, thou sonof man, sayunto the childrenof thy people,The righteousnessof the righteousshall not deliverhim in the dayof his transgression:as for the wickednessof the wicked,he shall not fallthereby in the daythat he turnethfrom his wickedness;neither shall the righteousbe ableto livefor his [righteousness] in the daythat he sinneth.13When I shall sayto the righteous,[that] he shall surelylive;if he trustto his own righteousness, and commitiniquity, all his righteousnessesshall not be remembered;but for his iniquitythat he hath committed,he shall diefor it.14Again, when I sayunto the wicked,Thou shalt surelydie;if he turnfrom his sin,and dothat which is lawfuland right;15[If] the wickedrestorethe pledge, give againthat he had robbed, walkin the statutesof life, without committinginiquity;he shall surelylive,he shall not die.16None of his sinsthat he hath committedshall be mentionedunto him: he hath donethat which is lawfuland right;he shall surelylive.

17Yet the childrenof thy peoplesay,The wayof the Lordis not equal:but as for them, their wayis not equal.18When the righteousturnethfrom his righteousness, and committethiniquity,he shall even diethereby.19But if the wickedturnfrom his wickedness, and dothat which is lawfuland right,he shall livethereby.20Yet ye say,The wayof the Lordis not equal.O ye houseof Israel,I will judgeyou every oneafter his ways.

Explanation of Jerusalem's Fall

21And it came to pass in the twelfthyearof our captivity,in the tenth[month], in the fifth[day] of the month,[that] one that had escapedout of Jerusalemcameunto me, saying,The cityis smitten.22Now the handof the LORDwas upon me in the evening, aforehe that was escapedcame;and had openedmy mouth, until he cameto me in the morning;and my mouthwas opened, and I was no more dumb.

23Then the wordof the LORDcame unto me, saying,24Sonof man, they that inhabitthose wastesof the landof Israelspeak, saying,Abrahamwas one,and he inheritedthe land:but we [are] many;the landis givenus for inheritance.25Wherefore sayunto them, Thus saiththe LordGOD;Ye eatwith the blood, and lift upyour eyestoward your idols, and shedblood:and shall ye possessthe land?26Ye standupon your sword,ye workabomination, and ye defileevery onehis neighbour'swife:and shall ye possessthe land?27Saythou thus unto them, Thus saiththe LordGOD;[As] I live, surely they that [are] in the wastesshall fallby the sword, and him that [is] in the openfieldwill I giveto the beaststo be devoured, and they that [be] in the fortsand in the cavesshall dieof the pestilence.28For I will laythe landmostdesolate, and the pompof her strengthshall cease;and the mountainsof Israelshall be desolate, that none shall pass through.29Then shall they knowthat I [am] the LORD,when I have laidthe landmostdesolatebecause of all their abominationswhich they have committed.

30Also, thou sonof man,the childrenof thy peoplestill are talkingagainstthee by the wallsand in the doorsof the houses, and speakoneto another, every oneto his brother, saying,Come,I pray you, and hearwhat is the wordthat cometh forthfrom the LORD.31And they comeunto thee as the peoplecometh, and they sitbeforethee [as] my people, and they hearthy words, but they will not dothem: for with their mouththey shewmuch love,[but] their heartgoethaftertheir covetousness.32And, lo, thou [art] unto them as a very lovelysongof one that hath a pleasantvoice, and can play wellon an instrument:for they hearthy words, but they dothem not.33And when this cometh to pass,(lo, it will come,) then shall they knowthat a prophethath been amongthem.
