1Hear,O Israel:Thou [art] to pass overJordanthis day,to go into possessnationsgreaterand mightierthan thyself, citiesgreatand fenced upto heaven,2A peoplegreatand tall, the childrenof the Anakims, whom thou knowest, and [of whom] thou hast heard[say], Who can standbeforethe childrenof Anak!3Understandtherefore this day, that the LORDthy God[is] he which goeth overbeforethee; [as] a consumingfirehe shall destroythem, and he shall bring them downbefore thy face:so shalt thou drive them out,and destroythem quickly,as the LORDhath saidunto thee.
4Speaknot thou in thine heart, after that the LORDthy Godhath cast them outfrom beforethee, saying,For my righteousnessthe LORDhath brought me into possessthis land:but for the wickednessof these nationsthe LORDdoth drive them outfrom beforethee.5Not for thy righteousness,or for the uprightnessof thine heart, dost thou goto possesstheir land:but for the wickednessof these nationsthe LORDthy Goddoth drive them outfrom beforethee, and that he may performthe wordwhich the LORDswareunto thy fathers,Abraham,Isaac, and Jacob.
6Understandtherefore, that the LORDthy Godgiveththee not this goodlandto possessit for thy righteousness;for thou [art] a stiffneckedpeople.
The Golden Calf
(Exodus 32:1-6)
7Remember,[and] forgetnot, how thou provokedst the LORDthy Godto wrathin the wilderness:fromthe daythat thou didst depart outof the landof Egypt, until ye cameunto this place,ye have been rebelliousagainstthe LORD.8Also in Horebye provokedthe LORDto wrath,so that the LORDwas angrywith you to have destroyedyou.9When I was gone upinto the mountto receivethe tablesof stone,[even] the tablesof the covenantwhich the LORDmadewith you, then I abodein the mountfortydaysand fortynights,I neither did eatbreadnor drinkwater:10And the LORDdeliveredunto me twotablesof stonewrittenwith the fingerof God;and on them [was written] according to all the words, which the LORDspakewith you in the mountout of the midstof the firein the dayof the assembly.11And it came to pass at the endof fortydaysand fortynights,[that] the LORDgaveme the twotablesof stone,[even] the tablesof the covenant.12And the LORDsaidunto me, Arise, get thee downquicklyfrom hence; for thy peoplewhich thou hast brought forthout of Egypthave corrupted[themselves]; they are quicklyturned asideout of the waywhich I commandedthem; they have madethem a molten image.13Furthermore the LORDspakeunto me, saying,I have seenthis people, and, behold, it [is] a stiffneckedpeople:14Let me alone, that I may destroythem, and blot outtheir namefrom under heaven:and I will makeofthee a nationmightierand greaterthan they.
15So I turnedand came downfrom the mount, and the mountburnedwith fire:and the twotablesof the covenant[were] in my twohands.16And I looked, and, behold, ye had sinnedagainst the LORDyour God,[and] had madeyou a moltencalf:ye had turned asidequicklyout of the waywhich the LORDhad commandedyou.17And I tookthe twotables, and castthem out ofmy twohands, and brakethem before your eyes.18And I fell downbeforethe LORD,as at the first, fortydaysand fortynights:I did neither eatbread, nor drinkwater, because of all your sinswhich ye sinned,in doingwickedlyin the sightof the LORD,to provoke him to anger.19For I was afraidofthe angerand hot displeasure, wherewith the LORDwas wrothagainst you to destroyyou. But the LORDhearkenedunto me at that timealso.20And the LORDwas veryangrywith Aaronto have destroyedhim: and I prayedfor Aaronalso the same time.21And I tookyour sin,the calfwhich ye had made, and burntit with fire, and stampedit, [and] ground[it] very small,[even] until it was as smallas dust:and I castthe dustthereof into the brookthat descended outof the mount.
22And at Taberah, and at Massah, and at Kibrothhattaavah,ye provoked the LORDto wrath.23Likewise when the LORDsentyou from Kadeshbarnea, saying,Go upand possessthe landwhich I have givenyou; then ye rebelledagainst the commandmentof the LORDyour God,and ye believedhim not, nor hearkenedto his voice.24Ye have been rebelliousagainst the LORDfrom the daythat I knewyou.
25Thus I fell downbeforethe LORDfortydaysand fortynights,as I fell down[at the first]; because the LORDhad saidhe would destroyyou.26I prayedtherefore unto the LORD,and said,O LordGOD,destroynot thy peopleand thine inheritance, which thou hast redeemedthrough thy greatness, which thou hast brought forthout of Egyptwith a mightyhand.27Rememberthy servants,Abraham,Isaac, and Jacob;looknot unto the stubbornnessof this people, nor to their wickedness, nor to their sin:28Lest the landwhence thou broughtest us outsay,Because the LORDwas not ableto bringthem into the landwhich he promisedthem, and because he hatedthem, he hath brought them outto slaythem in the wilderness.29Yet they [are] thy peopleand thine inheritance, which thou broughtest outby thy mightypowerand by thy stretched outarm.
