Wanderings in the Wilderness

1Then we turned, and took our journeyinto the wildernessby the wayof the Redsea,as the LORDspakeunto me: and we compassedmountSeirmanydays.2And the LORDspakeunto me, saying,3Ye have compassedthis mountainlong enough:turnyou northward.4And commandthou the people, saying,Ye [are] to passthrough the coastof your brethrenthe childrenof Esau, which dwellin Seir;and they shall be afraidof you: take ye goodheedunto yourselves therefore:5Meddlenot with them; for I will not giveyou of their land,no, not so much as a footbreadth;because I have givenmountSeirunto Esau[for] a possession.6Ye shall buymeatof them for money, that ye may eat;and ye shall also buywaterof them for money, that ye may drink.7For the LORDthy Godhath blessedthee in all the worksof thy hand:he knoweththy walkingthrough this greatwilderness:these fortyyearsthe LORDthy God[hath been] with thee; thou hast lackednothing.

8And when we passedby from our brethrenthe childrenof Esau, which dweltin Seir, through the wayof the plainfrom Elath, and from Eziongaber,we turnedand passedby the wayof the wildernessof Moab.9And the LORDsaidunto me, Distressnot the Moabites, neither contendwith them in battle:for I will not givethee of their land[for] a possession;because I have givenArunto the childrenof Lot[for] a possession.10The Emimsdwelttherein in times past,a peoplegreat, and many, and tall,as the Anakims;11Whichalso were accountedgiants,as the Anakims;but the Moabitescallthem Emims.12The Horimsalso dweltin Seirbeforetime;but the childrenof Esausucceededthem, when they had destroyedthem from beforethem, and dweltin their stead; as Israeldidunto the landof his possession, which the LORDgaveunto them.13Now rise up,[said I], and get you overthe brookZered. And we went overthe brookZered.14And the spacein which we camefrom Kadeshbarnea, until we were come overthe brookZered,[was] thirtyand eightyears;until all the generationof the menof warwere wasted outfrom amongthe host,as the LORDswareunto them.15For indeed the handof the LORDwas against them, to destroythem from amongthe host, until they were consumed.

16So it came to pass, when all the menof warwere consumedand deadfrom amongthe people,17That the LORDspakeunto me, saying,18Thou art to pass overthrough Ar,the coastof Moab, this day:19And [when] thou comest nighover againstthe childrenof Ammon, distressthem not, nor meddlewith them: for I will not givethee of the landof the childrenof Ammon[any] possession;because I have givenit unto the childrenof Lot[for] a possession.20(That also was accounteda landof giants:giantsdwelttherein in old time;and the Ammonitescallthem Zamzummims;21A peoplegreat, and many, and tall,as the Anakims;but the LORDdestroyedthem beforethem; and they succeededthem, and dweltin their stead:22As he didto the childrenof Esau, which dweltin Seir, when he destroyedthe Horimsfrom beforethem; and they succeededthem, and dweltin their stead even unto this day:23And the Avimswhich dweltin Hazerim,[even] unto Azzah, the Caphtorims, which came forthout of Caphtor, destroyedthem, and dweltin their stead.)

King Sihon Defeated

24Rise ye up,take your journey, and pass overthe riverArnon:behold,I have giveninto thine handSihonthe Amorite, kingof Heshbon, and his land:beginto possess[it], and contendwith him in battle.25This daywill I beginto putthe dreadof thee and the fearof thee upon the nations[that are] under the whole heaven, who shall hearreportof thee, and shall tremble, and be in anguishbecause of thee.

26And I sentmessengersout of the wildernessof Kedemothunto Sihonkingof Heshbonwith wordsof peace,saying,27Let me passthrough thy land:I will goalong by the high way,I will neither turnunto the right handnor to the left.28Thou shalt sellme meatfor money, that I may eat;and giveme waterfor money, that I may drink:only I will pass throughon my feet;29(As the childrenof Esauwhich dwellin Seir, and the Moabiteswhich dwellin Ar,didunto me;) until I shall pass overJordaninto the landwhich the LORDour Godgivethus.30But Sihonkingof Heshbonwouldnot let us passby him: for the LORDthy Godhardenedhis spirit, and made his heartobstinate, that he might deliverhim into thy hand,as [appeareth] this day.31And the LORDsaidunto me, Behold,I have begunto giveSihonand his landbeforethee: beginto possess, that thou mayest inherithis land.

32Then Sihoncame outagainstus, he and all his people,to fightat Jahaz.33And the LORDour Goddeliveredhim beforeus; and we smotehim, and his sons, and all his people.34And we tookall his citiesat that time, and utterly destroyedthe men,and the women, and the little ones,of every city,we leftnone to remain:35Only the cattlewe took for a preyunto ourselves, and the spoilof the citieswhich we took.36From Aroer, which [is] by the brinkof the riverof Arnon, and [from] the citythat [is] by the river, even unto Gilead, there was not one citytoo strongfor us: the LORDour Goddeliveredall unto us:37Only unto the landof the childrenof Ammonthou camestnot, [nor] unto any placeof the riverJabbok, nor unto the citiesin the mountains, nor unto whatsoever the LORDour Godforbadus.
