David Avenges the Gibeonites

1Then there was a faminein the daysof Davidthreeyears,yearafteryear;and Davidenquiredofthe LORD.And the LORDanswered,[It is] for Saul,and for [his] bloodyhouse,because he slewthe Gibeonites.2And the kingcalledthe Gibeonites,and saidunto them; (now the Gibeonites[were] not of the childrenof Israel,but of the remnantof the Amorites;and the childrenof Israelhad swornunto them: and Saulsoughtto slaythem in his zealto the childrenof Israeland Judah.)3Wherefore Davidsaidunto the Gibeonites,What shall I dofor you? and wherewith shall I make the atonement,that ye may blessthe inheritanceof the LORD?4And the Gibeonitessaidunto him, We will have no silvernor goldofSaul,nor of his house;neither for us shalt thou killany manin Israel.And he said,What ye shall say,[that] will I dofor you.5And they answeredthe king,The manthat consumedus, and that devisedagainst us [that] we should be destroyedfrom remainingin any of the coastsof Israel,6Let sevenmenof his sonsbe deliveredunto us, and we will hang them upunto the LORDin Gibeahof Saul,[whom] the LORDdid choose.And the kingsaid,I will give[them].

7But the kingsparedMephibosheth,the sonof Jonathanthe sonof Saul,because of the LORD'Soaththat [was] between them, between Davidand Jonathanthe sonof Saul.8But the kingtookthe twosonsof Rizpahthe daughterof Aiah,whom she bareunto Saul,Armoniand Mephibosheth;and the fivesonsof Michalthe daughterof Saul,whom she brought upfor Adrielthe sonof Barzillaithe Meholathite:9And he deliveredthem into the handsof the Gibeonites,and they hangedthem in the hillbeforethe LORD:and they fell[all] seventogether,and were put to deathin the daysof harvest,in the first[days], in the beginningof barleyharvest.

10And Rizpahthe daughterof Aiahtooksackcloth,and spreadit for her upon the rock,from the beginningof harvestuntil waterdroppedupon them out of heaven,and sufferedneither the birdsof the airto reston them by day,nor the beastsof the fieldby night.11And it was toldDavidwhat Rizpahthe daughterof Aiah,the concubineof Saul,had done.12And Davidwentand tookthe bonesof Sauland the bonesof Jonathanhis sonfrom the menof Jabeshgilead,which had stolenthem from the streetof Bethshan,where the Philistineshad hanged{08675;08518:08804} them, whenthe Philistineshad slainSaulin Gilboa:13And he brought upfrom thence the bonesof Sauland the bonesof Jonathanhis son;and they gatheredthe bonesof them that were hanged.14And the bonesof Sauland Jonathanhis sonburiedthey in the countryof Benjaminin Zelah,in the sepulchreof Kishhis father:and they performedall that the kingcommanded.And afterthat Godwas intreatedfor the land.

Four Battles against the Philistines

15Moreover the Philistineshad yet waragain with Israel;and Davidwent down,and his servantswith him, and foughtagainst the Philistines:and Davidwaxed faint.16And Ishbibenob,which [was] of the sonsof the giant,the weightof whose spear[weighed] threehundred[shekels] of brassin weight,he being girdedwith a new[sword], thoughtto have slainDavid.17But Abishaithe sonof Zeruiahsuccouredhim, and smotethe Philistine,and killedhim. Then the menof Davidswareunto him, saying,Thou shalt gono more out with us to battle,that thou quenchnot the lightof Israel.

18And it came to pass after this,that there was again a battlewith the Philistinesat Gob:then Sibbechaithe HushathiteslewSaph,which [was] of the sonsof the giant.19And there was again a battlein Gobwith the Philistines,where Elhananthe sonof Jaareoregim,a Bethlehemite,slew[the brother of] Goliaththe Gittite,the staffof whose spear[was] like a weaver'sbeam.20And there was yet a battlein Gath,where was a manof [great] stature,that had on every handsixfingers,and on every footsixtoes,fourand twentyin number;and he also was bornto the giant.21And when he defiedIsrael,Jonathanthe sonof Shimeathe brotherof Davidslewhim.22These fourwere bornto the giantin Gath,and fellby the handof David,and by the handof his servants.
