Hushai Counters Ahithophel's Advice

1Moreover Ahithophelsaidunto Absalom,Let me now choose outtwelvethousandmen, and I will ariseand pursueafterDavidthis night:2And I will comeupon him while he [is] wearyand weakhanded, and will make him afraid:and all the peoplethat [are] with him shall flee;and I will smitethe kingonly:3And I will bring backall the peopleunto thee: the manwhom thou seekest[is] as if all returned:[so] all the peopleshall be in peace.4And the sayingpleasedAbsalomwell, and all the eldersof Israel.

5Then saidAbsalom,Callnow Hushaithe Architealso, and let us hearlikewise what he saith.6And when Hushaiwas cometo Absalom,Absalomspakeunto him, saying,Ahithophelhath spokenafter this manner:shall we do[after] his saying?if not; speakthou.7And Hushaisaidunto Absalom,The counselthat Ahithophelhath given[is] not goodat this time.8For, saidHushai, thou knowestthy fatherand his men, that they [be] mighty men,and they [be] chafedin their minds,as a bearrobbedof her whelps in the field:and thy father[is] a manof war,and will not lodgewith the people.9Behold, he is hidnow in somepit,or in some[other] place:and it will come to pass, when some of them be overthrownat the first, that whosoeverhearethit will say,There is a slaughteramong the peoplethat followAbsalom.10And he also [that is] valiant, whose heart[is] as the heartof a lion, shall utterlymelt:for all Israelknoweththat thy father[is] a mighty man,and [they] which [be] with him [are] valiantmen.11Therefore I counselthat all Israelbe generallygatheredunto thee, from Daneven to Beersheba,as the sandthat [is] by the seafor multitude;and that thou goto battlein thine own person.12So shall we comeupon him in someplacewhere he shall be found, and we will lightupon him as the dewfallethon the ground:and of him and of all the menthat [are] with him there shall not be leftso much asone.13Moreover, ifhe be gotteninto a city, then shall all Israelbringropesto that city, and we will drawit into the river, until there be not onesmall stonefoundthere.14And Absalomand all the menof Israelsaid,The counselof Hushaithe Archite[is] betterthan the counselof Ahithophel. For the LORDhad appointedto defeatthe goodcounselof Ahithophel,to the intentthat the LORDmight bringevilupon Absalom.
