(2 Kings 18:17-37) 9Afterthis did Sennacheribkingof Assyriasendhis servantsto Jerusalem,(but he [himself laid siege] against Lachish,and all his powerwith him,) unto Hezekiahkingof Judah,and unto all Judahthat [were] at Jerusalem,saying,10Thus saithSennacheribkingof Assyria,Whereon do ye trust,that ye abidein the siegein Jerusalem?11Doth not Hezekiahpersuadeyou to giveover yourselves to dieby famineand by thirst,saying,The LORDour Godshall deliverus out of the handof the kingof Assyria?12Hath not the same Hezekiahtaken awayhis high placesand his altars,and commandedJudahand Jerusalem,saying,Ye shall worshipbeforeonealtar,and burn incenseupon it?13Knowye not what I and my fathershave doneunto all the peopleof [other] lands?were the godsof the nationsof those landsany waysableto delivertheir landsout of mine hand?14Who [was there] among all the godsof those nationsthat my fathersutterly destroyed,that coulddeliverhis peopleout of mine hand,that your Godshould be ableto deliveryou out of mine hand?15Now therefore let notHezekiahdeceiveyou, nor persuadeyou on this manner, neither yet believehim: for no godof any nationor kingdomwas ableto deliverhis peopleout of mine hand,and out of the handof my fathers:how much less shall your Goddeliveryou out of mine hand? 16And his servantsspakeyet [more] against the LORDGod,and against his servantHezekiah.17He wrotealso lettersto railon the LORDGodof Israel,and to speakagainst him, saying,As the godsof the nationsof [other] landshave not deliveredtheir peopleout of mine hand,so shall not the Godof Hezekiahdeliverhis peopleout of mine hand.18Then they criedwith a loudvoicein the Jews' speechunto the peopleof Jerusalemthat [were] on the wall,to affrightthem, and to troublethem; that they might takethe city.19And they spakeagainstthe Godof Jerusalem,as against the godsof the peopleof the earth,[which were] the workof the handsof man. (2 Kings 19:35-37) 20And for this [cause] Hezekiahthe king,and the prophetIsaiahthe sonof Amoz,prayedand criedto heaven.21And the LORDsentan angel,which cut offall the mighty menof valour,and the leadersand captainsin the campof the kingof Assyria.So he returnedwith shameof faceto his own land.And when he was comeinto the houseof his god,they that came forthof his own bowelsslewhim there with the sword.22Thus the LORDsavedHezekiahand the inhabitantsof Jerusalemfrom the handof Sennacheribthe kingof Assyria,and from the handof all [other], and guidedthem on every side.23And manybroughtgiftsunto the LORDto Jerusalem,and presentsto Hezekiahkingof Judah:so that he was magnifiedin the sightof all nationsfrom thenceforth. (2 Kings 20:1-11) 24In those daysHezekiahwas sickto the death,and prayedunto the LORD:and he spakeunto him, and he gavehim a sign.25But Hezekiahrendered not againaccording to the benefit[done] unto him; for his heartwas lifted up:therefore there was wrathupon him, and upon Judahand Jerusalem.26Notwithstanding Hezekiahhumbledhimself for the prideof his heart,[both] he and the inhabitantsof Jerusalem,so that the wrathof the LORDcamenot upon them in the daysof Hezekiah. 27And Hezekiahhad exceedingmuchrichesand honour:and he madehimself treasuriesfor silver,and for gold,and for preciousstones,and for spices,and for shields,and for all manner of pleasantjewels;28Storehousesalso for the increaseof corn,and wine,and oil;and stallsfor all manner of beasts,and cotesfor flocks.29Moreover he providedhim cities,and possessionsof flocksand herdsin abundance:for Godhad givenhim substanceverymuch.30This same Hezekiahalso stoppedthe upperwatercourseof Gihon,and brought it straightdownto the west sideof the cityof David.And Hezekiahprosperedin all his works.31Howbeitin [the business of] the ambassadorsof the princesof Babylon,who sentunto him to enquireof the wonderthat was [done] in the land,Godlefthim, to tryhim, that he might knowall [that was] in his heart. Hezekiah's Death 32Now the restof the actsof Hezekiah,and his goodness,behold, they [are] writtenin the visionof Isaiahthe prophet,the sonof Amoz,[and] in the bookof the kingsof Judahand Israel.33And Hezekiahsleptwith his fathers,and they buriedhim in the chiefestof the sepulchresof the sonsof David:and all Judahand the inhabitantsof Jerusalemdid himhonourat his death.And Manassehhis sonreignedin his stead. |
