(2 Kings 14:1-14) 1Amaziah[was] twentyand fiveyearsold[when] he began to reign,and he reignedtwentyand nineyearsin Jerusalem.And his mother'sname[was] Jehoaddanof Jerusalem.2And he did[that which was] rightin the sightof the LORD,but not with a perfectheart.3Now it came to pass, when the kingdomwas establishedto him, that he slewhis servantsthat had killedthe kinghis father.4But he slewnot their children,but [did] as [it is] writtenin the lawin the bookof Moses,where the LORDcommanded,saying,The fathersshall not diefor the children,neither shall the childrendiefor the fathers,but every manshall diefor his own sin. Amaziah's Victories 5Moreover AmaziahgatheredJudahtogether,and madethem captainsover thousands,and captainsover hundreds,according to the housesof [their] fathers,throughout all Judahand Benjamin:and he numberedthem from twentyyearsoldand above,and foundthem threehundredthousandchoice[men, able] to go forthto war,that could handlespearand shield.6He hiredalso an hundredthousandmightymen of valourout of Israelfor an hundredtalentsof silver.7But there camea manof Godto him, saying,O king,let not the armyof Israelgowith thee; for the LORD[is] not with Israel,[to wit, with] all the childrenof Ephraim.8But if thou wilt go,do[it], be strongfor the battle:Godshall make thee fallbeforethe enemy:for Godhathpowerto help,and to cast down.9And Amaziahsaidto the manof God,But what shall we dofor the hundredtalentswhich I have givento the armyof Israel?And the manof Godanswered,The LORDisable to givethee much morethan this.10Then Amaziahseparatedthem, [to wit], the armythat was cometo him out of Ephraim,to gohomeagain:wherefore their angerwas greatlykindledagainst Judah,and they returnedhomein greatanger. 11And Amaziahstrengthenedhimself, and led forthhis people,and wentto the valleyof salt,and smoteof the childrenof Seirtenthousand.12And [other] tenthousand[left] alivedid the childrenof Judahcarry away captive,and broughtthem unto the topof the rock,and cast them downfrom the topof the rock,that they all were broken in pieces.13But the soldiersof the armywhich Amaziahsent back,that they should not gowith him to battle,fellupon the citiesof Judah,from Samariaeven unto Bethhoron,and smotethreethousandof them, and tookmuchspoil. Amaziah Rebuked for Idolatry 14Now it came to pass, afterthat Amaziahwas comefrom the slaughterof the Edomites,that he broughtthe godsof the childrenof Seir,and set them up[to be] his gods,and bowed downhimself beforethem, and burned incenseunto them.15Wherefore the angerof the LORDwas kindledagainst Amaziah,and he sentunto him a prophet,which saidunto him, Why hast thou soughtafter the godsof the people,which could not delivertheir own peopleout of thine hand?16And it came to pass, as he talkedwith him, that [the king] saidunto him, Art thou madeof the king'scounsel?forbear;why shouldest thou be smitten?Then the prophetforbare,and said,I knowthat Godhath determinedto destroythee, because thou hast donethis, and hast not hearkenedunto my counsel. Amaziah Defeated by Joash of Israel 17Then Amaziahkingof Judahtook advice,and sentto Joash,the sonof Jehoahaz,the sonof Jehu,kingof Israel,saying,Come,let us see one anotherin the face.18And Joashkingof Israelsentto Amaziahkingof Judah,saying,The thistlethat [was] in Lebanonsentto the cedarthat [was] in Lebanon,saying,Givethy daughterto my sonto wife:and there passed bya wildbeastthat [was] in Lebanon,and trode downthe thistle.19Thou sayest,Lo, thou hast smittenthe Edomites;and thine heartlifteth thee upto boast:abidenow at home;why shouldest thou meddleto [thine] hurt,that thou shouldest fall,[even] thou, and Judahwith thee? 20But Amaziahwould not hear;for it [came] of God,that he might deliverthem into the hand[of their enemies], because they soughtafter the godsof Edom.21So Joashthe kingof Israelwent up;and they saw one anotherin the face,[both] he and Amaziahkingof Judah,at Bethshemesh,which [belongeth] to Judah.22And Judahwas put to the worsebeforeIsrael,and they fledevery manto his tent.23And Joashthe kingof IsraeltookAmaziahkingof Judah,the sonof Joash,the sonof Jehoahaz,at Bethshemesh,and broughthim to Jerusalem,and brake downthe wallof Jerusalemfrom the gateof Ephraimto the cornergate,fourhundredcubits.24And [he took] all the goldand the silver,and all the vesselsthat were foundin the houseof Godwith Obededom,and the treasuresof the king'shouse,the hostagesalso, and returnedto Samaria. The Death of Amaziah 25And Amaziahthe sonof Joashkingof Judahlivedafterthe deathof Joashsonof Jehoahazkingof Israelfifteenyears.26Now the restof the actsof Amaziah,firstand last,behold, [are] they not writtenin the bookof the kingsof Judahand Israel?27Now after the timethat Amaziahdid turn awayfrom followingthe LORDthey madea conspiracyagainst him in Jerusalem;and he fledto Lachish:but they sentto Lachishafterhim, and slewhim there.28And they broughthim upon horses,and buriedhim with his fathersin the cityof Judah. |
