KJV + Strong's War with the Philistines 1Saulreignedone year;and when he had reignedtwoyearsover Israel, 2Saulchosehim threethousand[men] of Israel;[whereof] two thousandwere with Saulin Michmashand in mountBethel,and a thousandwere with Jonathanin Gibeahof Benjamin:and the restof the peoplehe sentevery manto his tent.3And Jonathansmotethe garrisonof the Philistinesthat [was] in Geba,and the Philistinesheard[of it]. And Saulblewthe trumpetthroughout all the land,saying,Let the Hebrewshear.4And all Israelheardsay[that] Saulhad smittena garrisonof the Philistines,and [that] Israelalso was had in abominationwith the Philistines.And the peoplewere called togetherafterSaulto Gilgal. 5And the Philistinesgathered themselves togetherto fightwith Israel,thirtythousandchariots,and sixthousandhorsemen,and peopleas the sandwhich [is] on the seashorein multitude:and they came up,and pitchedin Michmash,eastwardfrom Bethaven.6When the menof Israelsawthat they were in a strait,(for the peoplewere distressed,) then the peopledid hidethemselves in caves,and in thickets,and in rocks,and in high places,and in pits.7And [some of] the Hebrewswent overJordanto the landof Gadand Gilead.As for Saul,he [was] yet in Gilgal,and all the peoplefollowedhim trembling. Saul's Unlawful Sacrifice 8And he tarried{08675;03176:08735} sevendays,according to the set timethat Samuel[had appointed]: but Samuelcamenot to Gilgal;and the peoplewere scatteredfrom him.9And Saulsaid,Bring hithera burnt offeringto me, and peace offerings.And he offeredthe burnt offering. Samuel Rebukes Saul 10And it came to pass, that as soon as he had made an endof offeringthe burnt offering,behold, Samuelcame;and Saulwent outto meethim, that he might salutehim.11And Samuelsaid,What hast thou done?And Saulsaid,Because I sawthat the peoplewere scatteredfrom me, and [that] thou camestnot within the daysappointed,and [that] the Philistinesgathered themselves togetherat Michmash;12Therefore saidI, The Philistineswill come downnow upon me to Gilgal,and I have not made supplicationuntothe LORD:I forcedmyself therefore, and offereda burnt offering.13And Samuelsaidto Saul,Thou hast done foolishly:thou hast not keptthe commandmentof the LORDthy God,which he commandedthee: for now would the LORDhave establishedthy kingdomupon Israelforever.14But now thy kingdomshall not continue:the LORDhath soughthim a manafter his own heart,and the LORDhath commandedhim [to be] captainover his people,because thou hast not kept[that] which the LORDcommandedthee. 15And Samuelarose,and gat him upfrom Gilgalunto Gibeahof Benjamin.And Saulnumberedthe people[that were] presentwith him, about sixhundredmen. Philistines Raid Israel 16And Saul,and Jonathanhis son,and the people[that were] presentwith them, abodein Gibeahof Benjamin:but the Philistinesencampedin Michmash.17And the spoilerscame outof the campof the Philistinesin threecompanies:onecompanyturnedunto the way[that leadeth to] Ophrah,unto the landof Shual:18And anothercompanyturnedthe way[to] Bethhoron:and anothercompanyturned[to] the wayof the borderthat lookethto the valleyof Zeboimtoward the wilderness. Israel without Weapons 19Now there was no smithfoundthroughout all the landof Israel:for the Philistinessaid,Lest the Hebrewsmake[them] swordsor spears:20But all the Israeliteswent downto the Philistines,to sharpenevery manhis share,and his coulter,and his axe,and his mattock.21Yet they had a filefor the mattocks,and for the coulters,and for the forks,and for the axes,and to sharpenthe goads.22So it came to pass in the dayof battle,that there was neither swordnor spearfoundin the handof any of the peoplethat [were] with Sauland Jonathan:but with Sauland with Jonathanhis sonwas there found.23And the garrisonof the Philistineswent outto the passageof Michmash. |
