1And Benhadadthe kingof Syriagatheredall his hosttogether:and [there were] thirtyand twokingswith him, and horses, and chariots:and he went upand besiegedSamaria, and warredagainst it.2And he sentmessengersto Ahabkingof Israelinto the city, and saidunto him, Thus saithBenhadad,3Thy silverand thy gold[is] mine; thy wivesalso and thy children,[even] the goodliest,[are] mine.4And the kingof Israelansweredand said,My lord,O king, according to thy saying,I [am] thine, and all that I have.5And the messengerscame again, and said,Thus speakethBenhadad, saying,Although I have sentunto thee, saying,Thou shalt deliverme thy silver, and thy gold, and thy wives, and thy children;6Yet I will sendmy servantsunto thee to morrowabout this time, and they shall searchthine house, and the housesof thy servants;and it shall be,[that] whatsoever is pleasantin thine eyes, they shall put[it] in their hand, and take [it] away.

7Then the kingof Israelcalledall the eldersof the land, and said,Mark,I pray you, and seehow this [man] seekethmischief:for he sentunto me for my wives, and for my children, and for my silver, and for my gold;and I deniedhim not.8And all the eldersand all the peoplesaidunto him, Hearkennot [unto him], nor consent.9Wherefore he saidunto the messengersof Benhadad,Tellmy lordthe king,All that thou didst sendfor to thy servantat the firstI will do:but this thingI maynot do.And the messengersdeparted, and broughthim wordagain.10And Benhadadsentunto him, and said,The godsdo sounto me, and more also,if the dustof Samariashall sufficefor handfulsfor all the peoplethat followme.11And the kingof Israelansweredand said,Tell[him], Let not him that girdethon [his harness] boasthimself as he that putteth it off.12And it came to pass, when [Benhadad] heardthis message,as he [was] drinking,he and the kingsin the pavilions, that he saidunto his servants,Set[yourselves in array]. And they set[themselves in array] against the city.

13And, behold, there cameaprophetunto Ahabkingof Israel, saying,Thus saiththe LORD,Hast thou seenall this greatmultitude?behold, I will deliverit into thine handthis day;and thou shalt knowthat I [am] the LORD.14And Ahabsaid,By whom? And he said,Thus saiththe LORD,[Even] by the young menof the princesof the provinces. Then he said,Who shall orderthe battle? And he answered,Thou.15Then he numberedthe young menof the princesof the provinces, and they were twohundredand thirtytwo:and afterthem he numberedall the people,[even] all the childrenof Israel,[being] seventhousand.

16And they went outat noon. But Benhadad[was] drinkinghimself drunkin the pavilions,he and the kings, the thirtyand twokingsthat helpedhim.17And the young menof the princesof the provinceswent outfirst;and Benhadadsent out,and they toldhim, saying,There are mencome outof Samaria.18And he said,Whether they be come outfor peace, takethem alive;or whether they be come outfor war, takethem alive.

19So these young menof the princesof the provincescame outof the city, and the armywhich followedthem.20And they slewevery onehis man:and the Syriansfled;and Israelpursuedthem: and Benhadadthe kingof Syriaescapedon an horsewith the horsemen.21And the kingof Israelwent out,and smotethe horsesand chariots, and slewthe Syrianswith a greatslaughter.

22And the prophetcameto the kingof Israel, and saidunto him, Go,strengthenthyself, and mark, and seewhat thou doest:for at the returnof the yearthe kingof Syriawill come upagainst thee.

23And the servantsof the kingof Syriasaidunto him, Their gods[are] godsof the hills;therefore they were strongerthan we; butlet us fightagainst them in the plain, and surelywe shall be strongerthan they.24And dothis thing,Takethe kingsaway, every manout of his place, and putcaptainsin their rooms:25And numberthee an army, like the armythat thou hast lost, horsefor horse, and chariotfor chariot:and we will fightagainstthem in the plain,[and] surely we shall be strongerthan they. And he hearkenedunto their voice, and did so.

Another War with Ben-Hadad

26And it came to pass at the returnof the year, that Benhadadnumberedthe Syrians, and went upto Aphek,to fightagainst Israel.27And the childrenof Israelwere numbered, and were all present, and wentagainstthem: and the childrenof Israelpitchedbefore them like twolittle flocksof kids;but the Syriansfilledthe country.28And there camea manof God,and spakeunto the kingof Israel, and said,Thus saiththe LORD,Because the Syrianshave said,The LORD[is] Godof the hills, but he [is] not Godof the valleys, therefore will I deliverall this greatmultitudeinto thine hand, and ye shall knowthat I [am] the LORD.29And they pitchedoneover againstthe othersevendays. And [so] it was, that in the seventhdaythe battlewas joined:and the childrenof Israelslewof the Syriansan hundredthousandfootmenin oneday.30But the restfledto Aphek, into the city;and [there] a wallfellupon twentyand seventhousandof the men[that were] left. And Benhadadfled, and cameinto the city, into an innerchamber.

Ahab Spares Ben-Hadad

31And his servantssaidunto him, Behold now, we have heardthat the kingsof the houseof Israel[are] mercifulkings:let us, I pray thee, putsackclothon our loins, and ropesupon our heads, and go outto the kingof Israel:peradventure he will savethy life.32So they girdedsackclothon their loins, and [put] ropeson their heads, and cameto the kingof Israel, and said,Thy servantBenhadadsaith,I pray thee, let me live. And he said,[Is] he yet alive?he [is] my brother.33Now the mendid diligently observewhether [any thing would come] from him, and did hastilycatch[it]: and they said,Thy brotherBenhadad. Then he said,Goye, bringhim. Then Benhadadcame forthto him; and he caused him to come upinto the chariot.34And [Benhadad] saidunto him, The cities, which my fathertookfrom thy father,I will restore;and thou shalt makestreetsfor thee in Damascus,as my fathermadein Samaria. Then [said Ahab], I will send thee awaywith this covenant. So he madea covenantwith him, and sent him away.

A Prophet Reproves Ahab

35And a certainmanof the sonsof the prophetssaidunto his neighbourin the wordof the LORD,Smiteme, I pray thee. And the manrefusedto smitehim.36Then saidhe unto him, Because thou hast not obeyedthe voiceof the LORD,behold, as soon as thou art departedfrom me, a lionshall slaythee. And as soon as he was departedfrom him,a lionfoundhim, and slewhim.37Then he foundanotherman, and said,Smiteme, I pray thee. And the mansmotehim, so that in smitinghe wounded[him].38So the prophetdeparted, and waitedfor the kingby the way,and disguisedhimself with ashesupon his face.39And as the kingpassed by,he criedunto the king:and he said,Thy servantwent outinto the midstof the battle;and, behold, a manturned aside, and broughta manunto me, and said,Keepthis man:if by any meanshe be missing, then shall thy lifebe for his life,or else thou shalt paya talentof silver.40And as thy servantwas busyhere and there, he was gone. And the kingof Israelsaidunto him, So [shall] thy judgment[be]; thyself hast decided[it].41And he hasted, and took the ashesawayfrom his face;and the kingof Israeldiscernedhim that he [was] of the prophets.42And he saidunto him, Thus saiththe LORD,Because thou hast let goout of [thy] handa manwhom I appointed to utter destruction, therefore thy lifeshall go for his life, and thy peoplefor his people.43And the kingof Israelwentto his househeavyand displeased, and cameto Samaria.
