Měsíční tematické soutěže povzbuzují účastníky, aby si vyzkoušeli vyfotografovat nové předměty, nové fotografovací nebo úpravné techniky a zdokonalili své dovednosti, a zároveň tak rozšíříli sbírku svobodných obrázků na Commons.Fotografie posílané do soutěže musí být na Commons nové a pořízené uživatelem Commons.

Hlasovat mohou všichni registrovaní přispěvatelé, kteří vlastní účet nejméně 10 dní a mají 50 nebo více editací, a také noví přispěvatelé Commons, kteří se účastní výzvy se svou fotografií. Uživatelé nemohou hlasovat pro svůj vlastní obrázek. Hlasující mohou udělit body až třem fotografiím v každém tématu a u ostatních fotografií mohou udělit pochvalu bez udělování bodů.
