The match was sanctioned by theFIDE andICGA asMan vs. Machine World Championship^[2]. The six games match ended 3-3, Garry Kasparov winning game 1, Deep Junior winning game 3, and four remaining draws, most spectacular the bishop sacrifice by Deep Junior in game 5.

Nc3 Bb4 4. e3 O-O 5. Bd3 d5 6. cxd5 exd5 7. Nge2 Re8 8. O-O Bd6 9. a3 {With this rarely played move, Kasparov throws Deep Junior out of book. Whitecan either win space by b2-b4 or go for a kingside attack by f2-f3, then e3-e4and Qd1-e1-h4 (Utzinger,K)} 9... c6 {A positional sound reply. Deep Juniorprotects its central pawn and avoids Nc3-b5. A more active alternative was 9...c5 (Utzinger,K)} 10. Qc2 {(?!) In my opinion, 10.f3 was more precise. On theother hand I cannot imagine that Kasparov had not thought about the comingsacrifice. (Utzinger,K)} 10... Bxh2+ {Wow!! Deep Junior sacrifices his bishop. Can Kasparov hold this position? Man vs Machine Symposium

In October 2002, a symposium with the titleMan versus Machine: the Experiment was held at theUniversity of Haifa in preparation for the upcomingKasparov versus Deep Junior Match. The aim was to explore the fundamental issues of the interaction between "Man versus Machine" and the sportive value of such competitions.
