David Slate 1974[1]

David J. Slate,
an American computer scientist and former computer chess programmer. He started chess programming in 1968 as physics graduate student atNorthwestern University, and by mid 1969 joined the group ofLarry Atkin andKeith Gorlen, to produce their first successful program,Chess 2.0. After Gorlen left the Northwestern in 1970, the development continued under Atkin and Slate. Later supported byCDC Cyber consultantDavid Cahlander, Chess almost dominated computer chess during the 70s in the United States.

From the late 70s, Slate collaborated withWilliam Blanchard to build their new chess programNuchess. In the early 80s, David Slate was further involved in the development of programs fordedicated chess computers. Affiliated withApplied Concepts, and along with Atkin, Slate co-authored theGruenfeld andCapablanca module programs for theGreat Game Machine and theChafitz modular game system. David Slate further worked withPeter W. Frey onPattern and Letter Recognition[2][3].
