Anatoly Uskov
Anatoly V. Uskov,
a Russian computer scientist. In1963[3] atAlexander Kronrod’s laboratory at the MoscowInstitute of Theoretical and Experimental Physics (ITEP), Anatoly Uskov co-developed theITEP Chess Program, together withGeorgy Adelson-Velsky,Vladimir Arlazarov andAlexander Zhivotovsky, advised by Russian chess masterAlexander Bitman and three-time world championMikhail Botvinnik.
At the end of 1966 afour game match began between theKotok-McCarthy-Program, running on aIBM 7090 computer, and theITEP Chess Program on a SovietM-20 computer. The match played over nine months was won 3-1 by the TheITEP program, despite playing on slower hardware. By 1971,Mikhail V. Donskoy joined with Arlazarov and Uskov to program its successor on anICL System 4/70 at theInstitute of Control Sciences, calledKaissa, which became the firstWorld Computer Chess Champion in1974 in Stockholm.
