ShogiShogi is the member of theChessfamily which is most widely played inJapan. If you look past the surface details, the overallboard plan and movement style is similar to chess; but there are a lotof interesting details.Theboardis9x9 rather than 8x8. Players start with 20 pieces each, whichare 5-sided and traditionally inscribed with Kanjicharacters. (At Boardspace, the default pieces are labeledwith westernized images, but the traditional set is also available.). Thepieceshave other unusual characteristics. Most of the pieces can bepromoted, andbecome more powerful, when they reach the 7'th rank. The mostunusual feature is that captured pieces are not "out of the game" as inchess, but can be returned to the game by dropping them almost anywhereon the board. Where Chess trades down andsimplifies, Shogi becomes ever more complex as captured piecesparachute into the middle of the fray. Checkmateissimilar to Chess. Complete rules can be foundhere. Robots: Adequate. | ![]() | ![]() |
