1Nowbeforethe Feastof the Passover,Jesusknowingthat His hourhad comethat He would departout of thisworldto the Father,having lovedHis ownwhowere in the world,He lovedthem to the end.2Duringsupper,the devilhaving alreadyputinto the heartof JudasIscariot,[the son] of Simon,to betrayHim,3[Jesus], knowingthat the Fatherhad givenall thingsinto His hands,and that He had come forthfrom Godand was going backto God,4gotup from supper,and laid asideHis garments;and takinga towel,He girdedHimself.
5ThenHe pouredwaterinto the basin,and beganto washthe disciples'feetand to wipethem with the towelwith whichHe was girded.6SoHe cameto SimonPeter.He saidto Him, "Lord,do You washmy feet?"7Jesusansweredand saidto him, "WhatI doyou do not realizenow,but you will understandhereafter."8Petersaidto Him, "Nevershall You washmy feet!"Jesusansweredhim, "IfI do not washyou, you havenopartwith Me."9SimonPetersaidto Him, "Lord,[then wash] not onlymy feet,but alsomy handsand my head."10Jesussaidto him, "He who has bathedneedsonlyto washhis feet,but is completelyclean;and you are clean,but not all[of you]."11For He knewthe one who was betrayingHim; for thisreasonHe said,"Not allof you are clean."
12SowhenHe had washedtheir feet,and takenHis garmentsand reclined[at the table] again,He saidto them, "Do you knowwhatI have doneto you?13"You callMe Teacherand Lord;and you are right,for [so] I am.14"IfI then,the Lordand the Teacher,washedyour feet,you alsooughtto washone another'sfeet.15"For I gaveyou an examplethat you alsoshould doas I didto you.16"Truly,truly,I sayto you, a slaveis not greaterthan his master,nor[is] one who is sentgreaterthan the one who senthim.17"Ifyou knowthese things,you are blessedifyou dothem.18"I do not speakof allof you. I knowthe onesI have chosen;but [it is] that the Scripturemay be fulfilled,HE WHO EATSMY BREADHAS LIFTEDUP HIS HEELAGAINSTME.'19"From nowon I am tellingyou before[it] comesto pass,sothat whenit does occur,you may believethat I am[He].20"Truly,truly,I sayto you, he who receiveswhomeverI sendreceivesMe; and he who receivesMe receivesHim who sentMe."
21When Jesushad saidthis,He became troubledin spirit,and testifiedand said,"Truly,truly,I sayto you, that oneof you will betrayMe."22The disciples[began] lookingat one another,at a loss[to know] of which oneHe was speaking.23There was recliningon Jesus'bosomoneof His disciples,whomJesusloved.24SoSimonPetergesturedto him, and saidto him, "Tell[us] whoit is of whomHe is speaking."25He, leaning backthuson Jesus'bosom,saidto Him, "Lord,whois it?"26Jesusthenanswered,"That is the one for whomI shall dipthe morseland giveit to him." Sowhen He had dippedthe morsel,He tookand gaveit to Judas,[the son] of SimonIscariot.27Afterthe morsel,Satanthenenteredinto him. ThereforeJesussaidto him, "Whatyou do,doquickly."28Nowno oneof thosereclining[at the table] knewfor whatpurpose He had saidthisto him.29For somewere supposing,becauseJudashadthe money box,that Jesuswas sayingto him, "Buythe things we haveneedof for the feast";or else,that he should givesomethingto the poor.30Soafter receivingthe morselhe wentout immediately;and it was night.
31Thereforewhenhe had goneout, Jesussaid,"Nowis the Sonof Manglorified,and Godis glorifiedin Him;32ifGodis glorifiedin Him, Godwill alsoglorifyHim in Himself,and will glorifyHim immediately.33"Little children,I amwith you a little whilelonger.You will seekMe; and as I saidto the Jews,nowI alsosayto you, 'WhereI am going,you cannotcome.'34"A newcommandmentI giveto you, that you loveoneanother,evenas I have lovedyou, that you alsoloveone another.35"By thisall menwill knowthat you are My disciples,ifyou havelovefor one another."
36SimonPetersaidto Him, "Lord,whereare You going?"Jesusanswered,"WhereI go,you cannotfollowMe now;but you will followlater."37Petersaidto Him, "Lord,whycanI not followYou right now?I will lay downmy lifefor You."38Jesusanswered,"Will you lay downyour lifefor Me? Truly,truly,I sayto you, a roosterwill not crowuntilyou denyMe three times.
