1"Now thisis the commandment,the statutesand the judgmentswhichthe LORDyour Godhas commanded[me] to teachyou, that you might do[them] in the landwhereyou are goingoverto possessit,2sothat you and your sonand your grandsonmight fearthe LORDyour God,to keepallHis statutesand His commandmentswhichI commandyou, allthe daysof your life,and that your daysmay be prolonged.3"O Israel,you should listenand be carefulto do[it], that it may be wellwith you and that you may multiplygreatly,justas the LORD,the Godof your fathers,has promisedyou, [in] a landflowingwith milkand honey.
4"Hear,O Israel!The LORDis our God,the LORDis one!5"You shall lovethe LORDyour Godwith allyour heartand with allyour souland with allyour might.6"Thesewords,whichI am commandingyou today,shall be on your heart.7You shall teachthem diligentlyto your sonsand shall talkof them when you sitin your houseand when you walkby the wayand when you liedownand when you riseup.8"You shall bindthem as a signon your handand they shall be as frontalson your forehead.9"You shall writethem on the doorpostsof your houseand on your gates.
10"Then it shall comeabout whenthe LORDyour Godbringsyou into the landwhichHe sworeto your fathers,Abraham,Isaacand Jacob,to giveyou, greatand splendidcitieswhichyou did not build,11and housesfullof allgoodthingswhichyou did not fill,and hewncisternswhichyou did not dig,vineyardsand olivetreeswhichyou did not plant,and you eatand are satisfied,12then watchyourself, that you do not forgetthe LORDwhobroughtyou from the landof Egypt,out of the houseof slavery.13"You shall fear[only] the LORDyour God;and you shall worshipHim and swearby His name.14"You shall not followothergods,anyof the godsof the peopleswhosurroundyou,15for the LORDyour Godin the midstof you is a jealousGod;otherwisethe angerof the LORDyour Godwill be kindledagainst you, and He will wipeyou offthe faceof the earth.
16"You shall not putthe LORDyour Godto the test,as you tested[Him] at Massah.17"You should diligentlykeepthe commandmentsof the LORDyour God,and His testimoniesand His statuteswhichHe has commandedyou.18"You shall dowhat is rightand goodin the sightof the LORD,that it may be wellwith you and that you may goin and possessthe goodlandwhichthe LORDsworeto [give] your fathers,19by drivingout allyour enemiesfrom beforeyou, as the LORDhas spoken.
20"Whenyour sonasksyou in timeto come,saying,'What[do] the testimoniesand the statutesand the judgments[mean] whichthe LORDour Godcommandedyou?'21then you shall sayto your son,'We were slavesto Pharaohin Egypt,and the LORDbroughtus from Egyptwith a mightyhand.22Moreover, the LORDshowedgreatand distressingsignsand wondersbefore our eyesagainst Egypt,Pharaohand allhis household;23He broughtus out from therein orderto bringus in, to giveus the landwhichHe had swornto our fathers.'24"So the LORDcommandedus to observeallthesestatutes,to fearthe LORDour Godfor our goodalwaysand for our survival,as [it is] today.25"It will be righteousnessfor us ifwe are carefulto observeallthiscommandmentbeforethe LORDour God,justas He commandedus.
