So be verycareful;5do not provokethem, for I will not giveyou anyof their land,even[as little as] a footstepbecauseI have givenMountSeirto Esauas a possession.6"You shall buyfoodfrom them with moneyso that you may eat,and you shall alsopurchasewaterfrom them with moneyso that you may drink.7"For the LORDyour Godhas blessedyou in allthat you have done;He has knownyour wanderingsthrough thisgreatwilderness.Thesefortyyearsthe LORDyour Godhas been with you; you have not lackeda thing."'
8"So we passedbeyondour brothersthe sonsof Esau,who livein Seir,awayfrom the Arabahroad,awayfrom Elathand from Ezion-geber.And we turnedand passedthroughby the wayof the wildernessof Moab.9"Then the LORDsaidto me, 'Do not harassMoab,norprovokethem to war,for I will not giveyou anyof their landas a possession,becauseI have givenArto the sonsof Lotas a possession.10(The Emimlivedthere formerly,a peopleas great,numerous,and tallas the Anakim.11Like the Anakim,they are alsoregardedas Rephaim,but the Moabitescallthem Emim.12The Horitesformerlylivedin Seir,but the sonsof Esaudispossessedthem and destroyedthem from beforethem and settledin their place,justas Israeldidto the landof their possessionwhichthe LORDgaveto them.)13Nowariseand crossoverthe brookZeredyourselves.' So we crossedoverthe brookZered.14"Now the timethat it tookfor us to comefrom Kadesh-barneauntilwe crossedoverthe brookZeredwas thirty-eightyears,untilallthe generationof the menof warperishedfrom withinthe camp,as the LORDhad swornto them.15"Moreoverthe handof the LORDwas against them, to destroythem from withinthe campuntilthey all perished.
16"So it cameabout whenallthe menof warhad finallyperishedfrom amongthe people,17that the LORDspoketo me, saying,18Todayyou shall crossoverAr,the borderof Moab.19When you comeoppositethe sonsof Ammon,do not harassthem norprovokethem, for I will not giveyou anyof the landof the sonsof Ammonas a possession,becauseI have givenit to the sonsof Lotas a possession.'20(It is alsoregardedas the landof the Rephaim,[for] Rephaimformerlylivedin it, but the Ammonitescallthem Zamzummin,21a peopleas great,numerous,and tallas the Anakim,but the LORDdestroyedthem beforethem. And they dispossessedthem and settledin their place,22justas He didfor the sonsof Esau,who livein Seir,whenHe destroyedthe Horitesfrom beforethem; they dispossessedthem and settledin their placeevento thisday.23And the Avvim,who livedin villagesas faras Gaza,the Caphtorimwho camefrom Caphtor,destroyedthem and livedin their place.)24Arise,setout, and passthroughthe valleyof Arnon.Look!I have givenSihonthe Amorite,kingof Heshbon,and his landinto your hand;beginto takepossessionand contendwith him in battle.25ThisdayI will beginto putthe dreadand fearof you upon the peopleseverywhereunderthe heavens,who,when they hearthe reportof you, will trembleand be in anguishbecauseof you.'
26"So I sentmessengersfrom the wildernessof Kedemothto Sihonkingof Heshbonwith wordsof peace,saying,27Let me passthrough your land,I will travelonly on the highway;I will not turnasideto the rightor to the left.28You will sellme foodfor moneyso that I may eat,and giveme waterfor moneyso that I may drink,onlylet me passthroughon foot,29justas the sonsof Esauwho livein Seirand the Moabiteswho livein Ardidfor me, untilI crossoverthe Jordaninto the landwhichthe LORDour Godis givingto us.'30"But Sihonkingof Heshbonwas not willingfor us to passthrough his land; for the LORDyour Godhardenedhis spiritand madehis heartobstinate,in orderto deliverhim into your hand,as [he is] today.31"The LORDsaidto me, 'See,I have begunto deliverSihonand his landoverto you. Beginto occupy,that you may possesshis land.'
32"Then Sihonwith allhis peoplecameout to meetus in battleat Jahaz.33"The LORDour Goddeliveredhim overto us, and we defeatedhim with his sonsand allhis people.34"So we capturedallhis citiesat that timeand utterlydestroyedthe men,womenand childrenof everycity.We leftnosurvivor.35"We tookonlythe animalsas our bootyand the spoilof the citieswhichwe had captured.36"From Aroerwhichis on the edgeof the valleyof Arnonand [from] the citywhichis in the valley,even to Gilead,there was nocitythat was toohighfor us; the LORDour Goddeliveredalloverto us.37"Onlyyou did not gonearto the landof the sonsof Ammon,allalongthe riverJabbokand the citiesof the hillcountry,and whereverthe LORDour Godhad commandedus.
