1Whenthe dayof Pentecosthad come,they were alltogetherin oneplace.2And suddenlythere camefrom heavena noiselikea violentrushingwind,and it filledthe wholehousewherethey were sitting.3And there appearedto them tonguesas of firedistributingthemselves, and they restedon eachoneof them.4And they were allfilledwith the HolySpiritand beganto speakwith othertongues,as the Spiritwas givingthem utterance.
5Nowthere were Jewslivingin Jerusalem,devoutmenfrom everynationunderheaven.6And when thissoundoccurred,the crowdcame together,and were bewilderedbecauseeachoneof them was hearingthem speakin his ownlanguage.7They were amazedand astonished,saying,"Why,are not allthesewho are speakingGalileans?8"And howis it that we eachhear[them] in our ownlanguageto whichwe were born?9"Parthiansand Medesand Elamites,and residentsof Mesopotamia,Judeaand Cappadocia,Pontusand Asia,10Phrygiaand Pamphylia,Egyptand the districtsof LibyaaroundCyrene,and visitorsfrom Rome,bothJewsand proselytes,11Cretansand Arabs--we hearthem in our [own] tonguesspeakingof the mighty deedsof God."12And they allcontinued in amazementand great perplexity,sayingto oneanother,"Whatdoes thismean?"13But otherswere mockingand saying,"They are fullof sweet wine."
14But Peter,taking his standwith the eleven,raisedhis voiceand declaredto them: "Menof Judeaand allyou who livein Jerusalem,let thisbe knownto you and give heedto my words.15"For these menare not drunk,as you suppose,for it is [only] the thirdhourof the day;16but thisis what was spokenof throughthe prophetJoel:
17AND IT SHALL BE IN THE LASTDAYS,'Godsays,'THAT I WILL POUR FORTHOF MY SPIRITON ALLMANKIND;AND YOUR SONSAND YOUR DAUGHTERSSHALL PROPHESY,AND YOUR YOUNG MENSHALL SEEVISIONS,AND YOUR OLD MENSHALL DREAMDREAMS;
18EVENON MY BONDSLAVES, BOTH MEN AND WOMEN,I WILL IN THOSEDAYSPOUR FORTHOF MY SPIRITAnd they shall prophesy.
19AND I WILL GRANTWONDERSIN THE SKYABOVEAND SIGNSON THE EARTHBELOW,BLOOD,AND FIRE,AND VAPOROF SMOKE.
20THE SUNWILL BE TURNEDINTO DARKNESSAND THE MOONINTO BLOOD,BEFORETHE GREATAND GLORIOUSDAYOF THE LORDSHALL COME.
21AND IT SHALL BE THAT EVERYONEWHOCALLSON THE NAMEOF THE LORDWILL BE SAVED.'
22"Menof Israel,listento thesewords:Jesusthe Nazarene,a manattestedto you by Godwith miraclesand wondersand signswhichGodperformedthroughHim in your midst,justas you yourselvesknow--23this[Man], deliveredover by the predeterminedplanand foreknowledgeof God,you nailed to a crossby the handsof godless menand put [Him] to death.24"But Godraised Him up again,putting an endto the agonyof death,sinceit was impossiblefor Him to be heldin its power.
25"For Davidsaysof Him, 'I SAWTHE LORDALWAYSIN MY PRESENCE;FOR HE IS AT MY RIGHT HAND,SOTHAT I WILL NOT BE SHAKEN.
26THEREFOREMY HEARTWAS GLADAND MY TONGUEEXULTED;MOREOVERMY FLESHALSOWILL LIVEIN HOPE;
27BECAUSEYOU WILL NOT ABANDONMY SOULTO HADES,NORALLOWYOUR HOLY ONETO UNDERGODECAY.
28YOU HAVE MADE KNOWNTO ME THE WAYSOF LIFE;YOU WILL MAKE ME FULLOF GLADNESSWITH YOUR PRESENCE.'
29"Brethren,I mayconfidentlysayto you regardingthe patriarchDavidthat he bothdiedand was buried,and his tombis with us to thisday.30"And so,because he was a prophetand knewthat GODHAD SWORNTO HIM WITH AN OATHTO SEAT[one] OF HIS DESCENDANTSON HIS THRONE,31he looked aheadand spokeof the resurrectionof the Christ,that HE WAS NEITHERABANDONEDTO HADES,NORDID His fleshSUFFERDECAY.32"ThisJesusGodraised up again,to whichwe are allwitnesses.33"Thereforehaving been exaltedto the right handof God,and having receivedfrom the Fatherthe promiseof the HolySpirit,He has poured forththiswhichyou bothseeand hear.
34"For it was not Davidwho ascendedinto heaven,but he himselfsays:THE LORDSAIDTO MY LORD,"SITAT MY RIGHT HAND,
35UNTILI MAKEYOUR ENEMIESA FOOTSTOOLFOR YOUR FEET."'36"Thereforelet allthe houseof Israelknowfor certainthat Godhas madeHim bothLordand Christ--thisJesuswhomyou crucified."
37Nowwhen they heard[this], they were piercedto the heart,and saidto Peterand the restof the apostles,"Brethren,whatshall we do?"38Peter[said] to them, "Repent,and eachof you be baptizedin the nameof JesusChristfor the forgivenessof your sins;and you will receivethe giftof the HolySpirit.39"For the promiseis for you and your childrenand for allwhoare far off,as manyas the Lordour Godwill callto Himself."40And with manyotherwordshe solemnly testifiedand kept on exhortingthem, saying,"Be savedfrom thisperversegeneration!"41So then,thosewho had receivedhis wordwere baptized;and that daythere were addedaboutthree thousandsouls.42They were continually devoting themselvesto the apostles'teachingand to fellowship,to the breakingof breadand to prayer.
43Everyonekept feelinga sense of awe;and manywondersand signswere taking placethroughthe apostles.44And allthosewho had believedwere togetherand hadall thingsin common;45and they [began] sellingtheir propertyand possessionsand were sharingthem with all,as anyonemight haveneed.46Day by daycontinuingwith one mindin the temple,and breakingbreadfrom house to house,they were takingtheir mealstogetherwith gladnessand sincerityof heart,47praisingGodand havingfavorwith allthe people.And the Lordwas addingto their numberday by daythosewho were being saved.
