1Amaziahwas twenty-fiveyearsoldwhen he becameking,and he reignedtwenty-nineyearsin Jerusalem.And his mother'snamewas Jehoaddanof Jerusalem.2He didrightin the sightof the LORD,yetnot with a wholeheart.3Now it cameabout as soonas the kingdomwas firmlyin his grasp,that he killedhis servantswho had slainhis fatherthe king.4However, he did not puttheir childrento death,but [did] as it is writtenin the lawin the bookof Moses,whichthe LORDcommanded,saying,"Fathersshall not be putto deathfor sons,norsonsbe putto deathfor fathers,but eachshall be putto deathfor his own sin."
5Moreover, AmaziahassembledJudahand appointedthem according to [their] fathers'householdsunder commandersof thousandsand commandersof hundredsthroughoutJudahand Benjamin;and he tooka censusof those from twentyyearsoldand upwardand foundthem to be 300,000choicemen, [able] to goto war[and] handlespearand shield.6He hiredalso 100,000valiantwarriorsout of Israelfor one hundredtalentsof silver.7But a manof Godcameto him saying,"O king,do not let the armyof Israelgowith you, for the LORDis not with Israel[nor with] anyof the sonsof Ephraim.8"But ifyou do go,do[it], be strongfor the battle;[yet] Godwill bringyou downbeforethe enemy,for Godhaspowerto helpand to bringdown."9Amaziahsaidto the manof God,"But what[shall we] dofor the hundredtalentswhichI have givento the troopsof Israel?"And the manof Godanswered,"The LORDhasmuchmoreto giveyou thanthis."10Then Amaziahdismissedthem, the troopswhichcameto him from Ephraim,to gohome;so their angerburnedagainst Judahand they returnedhomein fierceanger.
11Now Amaziahstrengthenedhimself and ledhis peopleforth,and wentto the Valleyof Saltand struckdown10000of the sonsof Seir.12The sonsof Judahalso captured10000aliveand broughtthem to the topof the cliffand threwthem downfrom the topof the cliff,so that they were alldashedto pieces.13But the troopswhomAmaziahsentbackfrom goingwith him to battle,raidedthe citiesof Judah,from Samariato Beth-horon,and struckdown3000of them and plunderedmuchspoil.
14Now afterAmaziahcamefrom slaughteringthe Edomites,he broughtthe godsof the sonsof Seir,setthem up as his gods,boweddownbeforethem and burnedincenseto them.15Then the angerof the LORDburnedagainst Amaziah,and He senthim a prophetwho saidto him, "Whyhave you soughtthe godsof the peoplewhohave not deliveredtheir own peoplefrom your hand?"16As he was talkingwith him, the king saidto him, "Have we appointedyou a royalcounselor?Stop!Whyshould you be struckdown?"Then the prophetstoppedand said,"I knowthat Godhas plannedto destroyyou, becauseyou have donethisand have not listenedto my counsel."
17Then Amaziahkingof Judahtookcounseland sentto Joashthe sonof Jehoahazthe sonof Jehu,the kingof Israel,saying,"Come,let us faceeach other."18Joashthe kingof Israelsentto Amaziahkingof Judah,saying,"The thornbushwhichwas in Lebanonsentto the cedarwhichwas in Lebanon,saying,'Giveyour daughterto my sonin marriage.'But there passedby a wildbeastthat was in Lebanonand trampledthe thornbush.19"You said,'Behold,you have defeatedEdom.'And your hearthas becomeproudin boasting.Nowstayat home;for whyshould you provoketroubleso that you, even you, would falland Judahwith you?"
20But Amaziahwould not listen,for it was from God,that He might deliverthem into the hand[of Joash] becausethey had soughtthe godsof Edom.21So Joashkingof Israelwentup, and he and Amaziahkingof Judahfacedeach other at Beth-shemesh,whichbelonged to Judah.22Judahwas defeatedby Israel,and they fledeachto his tent.23Then Joashkingof IsraelcapturedAmaziahkingof Judah,the sonof Joashthe sonof Jehoahaz,at Beth-shemesh,and broughthim to Jerusalemand toredownthe wallof Jerusalemfrom the Gateof Ephraimto the CornerGate,400cubits.24[He took] allthe goldand silverand allthe utensilswhich were foundin the houseof Godwith Obed-edom,and the treasuresof the king'shouse,the hostagesalso, and returnedto Samaria.
25And Amaziah,the sonof Joashkingof Judah,livedfifteenyearsafterthe deathof Joash,sonof Jehoahaz,kingof Israel.26Now the restof the actsof Amaziah,from firstto last,behold,are they not writtenin the Bookof the Kingsof Judahand Israel?27From the timethat Amaziahturnedawayfrom followingthe LORDthey conspiredagainsthim in Jerusalem,and he fledto Lachish;but they sentafterhim to Lachishand killedhim there.28Then they broughthim on horsesand buriedhim with his fathersin the cityof Judah.
