The Sons of Aaron
(Leviticus 10:1-7)
1These also [are] the generationsof Aaronand Mosesin the day[that] the LORDspakewith Mosesin mountSinai.2And these [are] the namesof the sonsof Aaron;Nadabthe firstborn,and Abihu,Eleazar,and Ithamar.3These [are] the namesof the sonsof Aaron,the priestswhich were anointed,whom he consecratedto minister in the priest's office.4And Nadaband Abihudiedbeforethe LORD,when they offeredstrangefirebeforethe LORD,in the wildernessof Sinai,and they had no children:and Eleazarand Ithamarministered in the priest's officein the sightof Aarontheir father.
Duties of the Levites
5And the LORDspakeunto Moses,saying,6Bringthe tribeof Levinear,and presentthem beforeAaronthe priest,that they may ministerunto him.7And they shall keephis charge,and the chargeof the whole congregationbeforethe tabernacleof the congregation,to dothe serviceof the tabernacle.8And they shall keepall the instrumentsof the tabernacleof the congregation,and the chargeof the childrenof Israel,to dothe serviceof the tabernacle.9And thou shalt givethe Levitesunto Aaronand to his sons:they [are] wholly givenunto him out of the childrenof Israel.10And thou shalt appointAaronand his sons,and they shall wait ontheir priest's office:and the strangerthat cometh nighshall be put to death.
11And the LORDspakeunto Moses,saying,12And I, behold, I have takenthe Levitesfrom amongthe childrenof Israelinstead of all the firstbornthat openeththe matrixamong the childrenof Israel:therefore the Levitesshall be mine;13Because all the firstborn[are] mine; [for] on the daythat I smoteall the firstbornin the landof EgyptI hallowedunto me all the firstbornin Israel,both manand beast:mine shall they be: I [am] the LORD.
Registration of the Levites
14And the LORDspakeunto Mosesin the wildernessof Sinai,saying,15Numberthe childrenof Leviafter the houseof their fathers,by their families:every malefrom a montholdand upwardshalt thou numberthem.16And Mosesnumberedthem according to the wordof the LORD,as he was commanded.17And these were the sonsof Leviby their names;Gershon,and Kohath,and Merari.18And these [are] the namesof the sonsof Gershonby their families;Libni,and Shimei.19And the sonsof Kohathby their families;Amram,and Izehar,Hebron,and Uzziel.20And the sonsof Merariby their families;Mahli,and Mushi.These [are]the familiesof the Levitesaccording to the houseof their fathers.
The Gershonites
(Numbers 4:21-28;Numbers 4:38-41;1 Chronicles 23:7-11)
21Of Gershon[was] the familyof the Libnites,and the familyof the Shimites:these [are] the familiesof the Gershonites.22Those that were numberedof them, according to the numberof all the males,from a montholdand upward,[even] those that were numberedof them [were] seventhousandand fivehundred.23The familiesof the Gershonitesshall pitchbehindthe tabernaclewestward.24And the chiefof the houseof the fatherof the Gershonites[shall be] Eliasaphthe sonof Lael.
25And the chargeof the sonsof Gershonin the tabernacleof the congregation[shall be] the tabernacle,and the tent,the coveringthereof, and the hangingfor the doorof the tabernacleof the congregation,26And the hangingsof the court,and the curtainfor the doorof the court,which [is] by the tabernacle,and by the altarround about,and the cordsof it for all the servicethereof.
The Kohathites
(Numbers 4:1-20;Numbers 4:34-37;1 Chronicles 23:12-20)
27And of Kohath[was] the familyof the Amramites,and the familyof the Izeharites,and the familyof the Hebronites,and the familyof the Uzzielites:these [are] the familiesof the Kohathites.28In the numberof all the males,from a montholdand upward,[were] eightthousandand sixhundred,keepingthe chargeof the sanctuary.29The familiesof the sonsof Kohathshall pitchon the sideof the tabernaclesouthward.30And the chiefof the houseof the fatherof the familiesof the Kohathites[shall be] Elizaphanthe sonof Uzziel.31And their charge[shall be] the ark,and the table,and the candlestick,and the altars,and the vesselsof the sanctuarywherewith they minister,and the hanging,and all the servicethereof.32And Eleazarthe sonof Aaronthe priest[shall be] chiefover the chiefof the Levites,[and have] the oversightof them that keepthe chargeof the sanctuary.
The Merarites
(Numbers 4:29-33;Numbers 4:42-49;1 Chronicles 23:21-23)
33Of Merari[was] the familyof the Mahlites,and the familyof the Mushites:these [are] the familiesof Merari.34And those that were numberedof them, according to the numberof all the males,from a montholdand upward,[were] sixthousandand two hundred.35And the chiefof the houseof the fatherof the familiesof Merari[was] Zurielthe sonof Abihail:[these] shall pitchon the sideof the tabernaclenorthward.36And [under] the custodyand chargeof the sonsof Merari[shall be] the boardsof the tabernacle,and the barsthereof, and the pillarsthereof, and the socketsthereof, and all the vesselsthereof, and all that serveththereto,37And the pillarsof the courtround about,and their sockets,and their pins,and their cords.
Moses and Aaron
38But those that encampbeforethe tabernacletoward the east,[even] beforethe tabernacleof the congregationeastward,[shall be] Moses,and Aaronand his sons,keepingthe chargeof the sanctuaryfor the chargeof the childrenof Israel;and the strangerthat cometh nighshall be put to death.39All that were numberedof the Levites,which Mosesand Aaronnumberedat the commandmentof the LORD,throughout their families,all the malesfrom a montholdand upward,[were] twentyand twothousand.
Firstborn Sons Redeemed
40And the LORDsaidunto Moses,Numberall the firstbornof the malesof the childrenof Israelfrom a montholdand upward,and takethe numberof their names.41And thou shalt takethe Levitesfor me (I [am] the LORD) instead of all the firstbornamong the childrenof Israel;and the cattleof the Levitesinstead of all the firstlingsamong the cattleof the childrenof Israel.42And Mosesnumbered,as the LORDcommandedhim, all the firstbornamong the childrenof Israel.43And all the firstbornmalesby the numberof names,from a montholdand upward,of those that were numberedof them, were twentyand twothousandtwo hundredand threescore and thirteen.
44And the LORDspakeunto Moses,saying,45Takethe Levitesinstead of all the firstbornamong the childrenof Israel,and the cattleof the Levitesinstead of their cattle;and the Levitesshall be mine: I [am] the LORD.46And for those that are to be redeemedof the two hundredand threescore and thirteenof the firstbornof the childrenof Israel,which are morethanthe Levites;47Thou shalt even takefiveshekelsapiece by the poll,after the shekelof the sanctuaryshalt thou take[them]: (the shekel[is] twentygerahs:)48And thou shalt givethe money,wherewith the odd numberof them is to be redeemed,unto Aaronand to his sons.49And Mosestookthe redemptionmoneyof them that were overand above them that were redeemedby the Levites:50Of the firstbornof the childrenof Israeltookhe the money;a thousandthreehundredand threescoreand five[shekels], after the shekelof the sanctuary:51And Mosesgavethe moneyof them that were redeemedunto Aaronand to his sons,according to the wordof the LORD,as the LORDcommandedMoses.
