KJV + Strong's Nehemiah Sent to Jerusalem 1And it came to pass in the monthNisan,in the twentiethyearof Artaxerxesthe king,[that] wine[was] beforehim: and I took upthe wine,and gave[it] unto the king.Now I had not been [beforetime] sadin his presence.2Wherefore the kingsaidunto me, Why [is] thy countenancesad,seeing thou [art] not sick?this [is] nothing [else] but sorrowof heart.Then I was verysoreafraid,3And saidunto the king,Let the kinglivefor ever:why should not my countenancebe sad,when the city,the placeof my fathers'sepulchres,[lieth] waste,and the gatesthereof are consumedwith fire?4Then the kingsaidunto me, For what dost thou make request?So I prayedto the Godof heaven.5And I saidunto the king,If it pleasethe king,and if thy servanthave found favourin thy sight,that thou wouldest sendme unto Judah,unto the cityof my fathers'sepulchres,that I may buildit.6And the kingsaidunto me, (the queenalso sittingby him,) For how long shall thy journeybe? and when wilt thou return?So it pleasedthe kingto sendme; and I sethim a time.7Moreover I saidunto the king,If it pleasethe king,let lettersbe givenme to the governorsbeyondthe river,that they may convey me overtill I comeinto Judah;8And a letterunto Asaphthe keeperof the king'sforest,that he may giveme timberto make beamsfor the gatesof the palacewhich [appertained] to the house,and for the wallof the city,and for the housethat I shall enter into.And the kinggrantedme, according to the goodhandof my Godupon me. 9Then I cameto the governorsbeyondthe river,and gavethem the king'sletters.Now the kinghad sentcaptainsof the armyand horsemenwith me.10When Sanballatthe Horonite,and Tobiahthe servant,the Ammonite,heard[of it], it grievedthem exceedinglythat there was comea manto seekthe welfareof the childrenof Israel. Nehemiah Inspects the Walls 11So I cameto Jerusalem,and was there threedays.12And I arosein the night,I and somefewmenwith me; neither toldI [any] manwhat my Godhad putin my heartto doat Jerusalem:neither [was there any] beastwith me, save the beastthat I rode upon.13And I went outby nightby the gateof the valley,even beforethe dragonwell,and to the dungport,and viewed{08675;07665:08799} the wallsof Jerusalem,which were broken down,and the gatesthereof were consumedwith fire.14Then I went onto the gateof the fountain,and to the king'spool:but [there was] no placefor the beast[that was] under me to pass.15Then went I upin the nightby the brook,and viewed{08675;07665:08799} the wall,and turned back,and enteredby the gateof the valley,and [so] returned.16And the rulersknewnot whither I went,or what I did;neither had I as yettold[it] to the Jews,nor to the priests,nor to the nobles,nor to the rulers,nor to the restthat didthe work. 17Then saidI unto them, Ye seethe distressthat we [are] in, how Jerusalem[lieth] waste,and the gatesthereof are burnedwith fire:come,and let us build upthe wallof Jerusalem,that we be no more a reproach.18Then I toldthem of the handof my Godwhich was goodupon me; as also the king'swordsthat he had spokenunto me. And they said,Let us rise upand build.So they strengthenedtheir handsfor [this] good[work].19But when Sanballatthe Horonite,and Tobiahthe servant,the Ammonite,and Geshemthe Arabian,heard[it], they laughed us to scorn,and despisedus, and said,What [is] this thingthat ye do?will ye rebelagainst the king?20Then answeredI them, and saidunto them, The Godof heaven,he will prosperus; therefore we his servantswill ariseand build:but ye have no portion,nor right,nor memorial,in Jerusalem. |
