1Then Joshuacalledthe Reubenites,and the Gadites,and the halftribeof Manasseh,2And saidunto them, Ye have keptall that Mosesthe servantof the LORDcommandedyou, and have obeyedmy voicein all that I commandedyou:3Ye have not leftyour brethrenthese manydaysunto this day,but have keptthe chargeof the commandmentof the LORDyour God.4And now the LORDyour Godhath given restunto your brethren,as he promisedthem: therefore now returnye, and getyou unto your tents,[and] unto the landof your possession,which Mosesthe servantof the LORDgaveyou on the other sideJordan.5But take diligentheedto dothe commandmentand the law,which Mosesthe servantof the LORDchargedyou, to lovethe LORDyour God,and to walkin all his ways,and to keephis commandments,and to cleaveunto him, and to servehim with all your heartand with all your soul.6So Joshuablessedthem, and sent them away:and they wentunto their tents.

7Now to the [one] halfof the tribeof ManassehMoseshad given[possession] in Bashan:but unto the [other] halfthereof gaveJoshuaamongtheir brethrenon this sideJordanwestward.And when Joshuasent them awayalso unto their tents,then he blessedthem,8And he spakeunto them, saying,Returnwith muchrichesunto your tents,and with verymuchcattle,with silver,and with gold,and with brass,and with iron,and with verymuchraiment:dividethe spoilof your enemieswith your brethren.9And the childrenof Reubenand the childrenof Gadand the halftribeof Manassehreturned,and departedfrom the childrenof Israelout of Shiloh,which [is] in the landof Canaan,to gounto the countryof Gilead,to the landof their possession,whereof they were possessed,according to the wordof the LORDby the handof Moses.

The Offensive Altar

10And when they cameunto the bordersof Jordan,that [are] in the landof Canaan,the childrenof Reubenand the childrenof Gadand the halftribeof Manassehbuiltthere an altarby Jordan,a greataltarto see to.11And the childrenof Israelheardsay,Behold, the childrenof Reubenand the childrenof Gadand the halftribeof Manassehhave builtan altarover againstthe landof Canaan,in the bordersof Jordan,at the passageof the childrenof Israel.12And when the childrenof Israelheard[of it], the whole congregationof the childrenof Israelgathered themselves togetherat Shiloh,to go upto waragainst them.

13And the childrenof Israelsentunto the childrenof Reuben,and to the childrenof Gad,and to the halftribeof Manasseh,into the landof Gilead,Phinehasthe sonof Eleazarthe priest,14And with him tenprinces,of eachchiefhousea princethroughout all the tribesof Israel;and each one[was] an headof the houseof their fathersamong the thousandsof Israel.15And they cameunto the childrenof Reuben,and to the childrenof Gad,and to the halftribeof Manasseh,unto the landof Gilead,and they spakewith them, saying,16Thus saiththe whole congregationof the LORD,What trespass[is] this that ye have committedagainst the Godof Israel,to turn awaythis dayfrom followingthe LORD,in that ye have buildedyou an altar,that ye might rebelthis dayagainst the LORD?17[Is] the iniquityof Peortoo littlefor us, from which we are not cleanseduntil this day,although there was a plaguein the congregationof the LORD,18But that ye must turn awaythis dayfrom followingthe LORD?and it will be, [seeing] ye rebelto dayagainst the LORD,that to morrowhe will be wrothwith the whole congregationof Israel.19Notwithstanding,if the landof your possession[be] unclean,[then] pass ye overunto the landof the possessionof the LORD,wherein the LORD'Stabernacledwelleth,and take possessionamongus: but rebelnot against the LORD,norrebelagainst us, in buildingyou an altarbesidethe altarof the LORDour God.20Did not Achanthe sonof Zerahcommita trespassin the accursed thing,and wrathfellon all the congregationof Israel?and that manperishednot alonein his iniquity.

21Then the childrenof Reubenand the childrenof Gadand the halftribeof Manassehanswered,and saidunto the headsof the thousandsof Israel,22The LORDGodof gods,the LORDGodof gods,he knoweth,and Israelhe shall know;if [it be] in rebellion,or if in transgressionagainst the LORD,(saveus not this day,)23That we have builtus an altarto turnfrom followingthe LORD,or if to offerthereon burnt offeringor meat offering,or if to offerpeaceofferingsthereon, let the LORDhimself require[it];24And if we have not [rather] doneit for fearof [this] thing,saying,In time to comeyour childrenmight speakunto our children,saying,What have ye to do with the LORDGodof Israel?25For the LORDhath madeJordana borderbetween us and you, ye childrenof Reubenand childrenof Gad;ye have no partin the LORD:so shall your childrenmakeour childrenceasefromfearingthe LORD.

26Therefore we said,Let us now prepareto buildus an altar,not for burnt offering,nor for sacrifice:27But [that] it [may be] a witnessbetween us, and you, and our generationsafterus, that we might dothe serviceof the LORDbeforehim with our burnt offerings,and with our sacrifices,and with our peace offerings;that your childrenmay not sayto our childrenin time to come,Ye have no partin the LORD.28Therefore saidwe, that it shall be, when they should [so] sayto us or to our generationsin time to come,that we may say[again], Beholdthe patternof the altarof the LORD,which our fathersmade,not for burnt offerings,nor for sacrifices;but it [is] a witnessbetween us and you.29God forbidthat we should rebelagainst the LORD,and turnthis dayfrom followingthe LORD,to buildan altarfor burnt offerings,for meat offerings,or for sacrifices,beside the altarof the LORDour Godthat [is] beforehis tabernacle.

30And when Phinehasthe priest,and the princesof the congregationand headsof the thousandsof Israelwhich [were] with him, heardthe wordsthat the childrenof Reubenand the childrenof Gadand the childrenof Manassehspake,it pleasedthem.31And Phinehasthe sonof Eleazarthe priestsaidunto the childrenof Reuben,and to the childrenof Gad,and to the childrenof Manasseh,This daywe perceivethat the LORD[is] amongus, because ye have not committedthis trespassagainst the LORD:nowye have deliveredthe childrenof Israelout of the handof the LORD.

32And Phinehasthe sonof Eleazarthe priest,and the princes,returnedfrom the childrenof Reuben,and from the childrenof Gad,out of the landof Gilead,unto the landof Canaan,to the childrenof Israel,and broughtthem wordagain.33And the thingpleasedthe childrenof Israel;and the childrenof IsraelblessedGod,and did not intendto go upagainst them in battle,to destroythe landwherein the childrenof Reubenand Gaddwelt.34And the childrenof Reubenand the childrenof Gadcalledthe altar[Ed]: for it [shall be] a witnessbetween us that the LORD[is] God.
