The Territory of Manasseh
1There was also a lotfor the tribeof Manasseh;for he [was] the firstbornof Joseph;[to wit], for Machirthe firstbornof Manasseh, the fatherof Gilead:because he was a manof war, therefore he had Gileadand Bashan.2There was also [a lot] for the restof the childrenof Manassehby their families;for the childrenof Abiezer, and for the childrenof Helek, and for the childrenof Asriel, and for the childrenof Shechem, and for the childrenof Hepher, and for the childrenof Shemida:these [were] the malechildrenof Manassehthe sonof Josephby their families.
3But Zelophehad, the sonof Hepher, the sonof Gilead, the sonof Machir, the sonof Manasseh, had no sons, but daughters:and these [are] the namesof his daughters,Mahlah, and Noah,Hoglah,Milcah, and Tirzah.4And they came nearbeforeEleazarthe priest, and beforeJoshuathe sonof Nun,and beforethe princes, saying,The LORDcommandedMosesto giveus an inheritanceamongour brethren. Therefore according to the commandmentof the LORDhe gavethem an inheritanceamongthe brethrenof their father.5And there felltenportionsto Manasseh, beside the landof Gileadand Bashan, which [were] on the other sideJordan;6Because the daughtersof Manassehhadan inheritanceamonghis sons:and the restof Manasseh'ssonshad the landof Gilead.
7And the coastof Manassehwas from Asherto Michmethah, that [lieth] beforeShechem;and the borderwent alongon the right handunto the inhabitantsof Entappuah.8[Now] Manassehhad the landof Tappuah:but Tappuahon the borderof Manasseh[belonged] to the childrenof Ephraim;9And the coastdescendedunto the riverKanah, southwardof the river:these citiesof Ephraim[are] amongthe citiesof Manasseh:the coastof Manassehalso [was] on the north sideof the river, and the outgoingsof it were at the sea:10Southward[it was] Ephraim's,and northward[it was] Manasseh's,and the seais his border;and they met togetherin Asheron the north, and in Issacharon the east.11And Manassehhad in Issacharand in AsherBethsheanand her towns, and Ibleamand her towns, and the inhabitantsof Dorand her towns, and the inhabitantsof Endorand her towns, and the inhabitantsof Taanachand her towns, and the inhabitantsof Megiddoand her towns,[even] threecountries.12Yet the childrenof Manassehcouldnot drive out[the inhabitants of] those cities;but the Canaaniteswoulddwellin that land.13Yet it came to pass, when the childrenof Israelwere waxen strong, that they putthe Canaanitesto tribute;but did not utterlydrive them out.
14And the childrenof Josephspakeunto Joshua, saying,Why hast thou givenme [but] onelotand oneportionto inherit, seeing I [am] a greatpeople, forasmuch asthe LORDhath blessedme hitherto?15And Joshuaansweredthem, If thou [be] a greatpeople,[then] get thee upto the wood[country], and cut downfor thyself there in the landof the Perizzitesand of the giants,if mountEphraimbe too narrowfor thee.16And the childrenof Josephsaid,The hillis not enoughfor us: and all the Canaanitesthat dwellin the landof the valleyhave chariotsof iron,[both they] who [are] of Bethsheanand her towns, and [they] who [are] of the valleyof Jezreel.17And Joshuaspakeunto the houseof Joseph,[even] to Ephraimand to Manasseh, saying,Thou [art] a greatpeople, and hast greatpower:thou shalt not have onelot[only]:18But the mountainshall be thine; for it [is] a wood, and thou shalt cut it down:and the outgoingsof it shall be thine: for thou shalt drive outthe Canaanites, though they have ironchariots,[and] though they [be] strong.
