Five Kings War against Gibeon

1Now it came to pass, when Adonizedekkingof Jerusalemhad heardhowJoshuahad takenAi,and had utterly destroyedit; as he had doneto Jerichoand her king,so he had doneto Aiand her king;and how the inhabitantsof Gibeonhad made peacewith Israel,and were amongthem;2That they fearedgreatly,because Gibeon[was] a greatcity,as oneof the royalcities,and because it [was] greaterthan Ai,and all the menthereof [were] mighty.3Wherefore Adonizedekkingof Jerusalemsentunto Hohamkingof Hebron,and unto Piramkingof Jarmuth,and unto Japhiakingof Lachish,and unto Debirkingof Eglon,saying,4Come upunto me, and helpme, that we may smiteGibeon:for it hath made peacewith Joshuaand with the childrenof Israel.5Therefore the fivekingsof the Amorites,the kingof Jerusalem,the kingof Hebron,the kingof Jarmuth,the kingof Lachish,the kingof Eglon,gathered themselves together,and went up,they and all their hosts,and encampedbefore Gibeon,and made waragainst it.

6And the menof Gibeonsentunto Joshuato the campto Gilgal,saying,Slacknot thy handfrom thy servants;come upto us quickly,and saveus, and helpus: for all the kingsof the Amoritesthat dwellin the mountainsare gathered togetheragainst us.7So Joshuaascendedfrom Gilgal,he, and all the peopleof warwith him, and all the mightymen of valour.8And the LORDsaidunto Joshua,Fearthem not: for I have deliveredthem into thine hand;there shall not a manof them standbeforethee.9Joshuatherefore cameunto them suddenly,[and] went upfrom Gilgalall night.10And the LORDdiscomfitedthem beforeIsrael,and slewthem with a greatslaughterat Gibeon,and chasedthem along the waythat goeth upto Bethhoron,and smotethem to Azekah,and unto Makkedah.11And it came to pass, as they fledfrom beforeIsrael,[and] were in the going downto Bethhoron,that the LORDcast downgreatstonesfrom heavenupon them unto Azekah,and they died:[they were] morewhich diedwith hailstonesthan [they] whomthe childrenof Israelslewwith the sword.

The Sun Stands Still

12Then spakeJoshuato the LORDin the daywhen the LORDdelivered upthe Amoritesbeforethe childrenof Israel,and he saidin the sightof Israel,Sun,stand thou stillupon Gibeon;and thou, Moon,in the valleyof Ajalon.

13And the sunstood still,and the moonstayed,until the peoplehad avengedthemselves upon their enemies.[Is] not thiswrittenin the bookof Jasher?So the sunstood stillin the midstof heaven,and hastednot to go downabout a wholeday.

14And there was no daylike that beforeit or afterit, that the LORDhearkenedunto the voiceof a man:for the LORDfoughtfor Israel.

15And Joshuareturned,and all Israelwith him, unto the campto Gilgal.

Victory at Makkedah

16But these fivekingsfled,and hidthemselves in a caveat Makkedah.17And it was toldJoshua,saying,The fivekingsare foundhidin a caveat Makkedah.18And Joshuasaid,Rollgreatstonesupon the mouthof the cave,and setmenby it for to keepthem:19And stayye not, [but] pursueafteryour enemies,and smite the hindmostof them; sufferthem not to enterinto their cities:for the LORDyour Godhath deliveredthem into your hand.20And it came to pass, when Joshuaand the childrenof Israelhad made an endof slayingthem with a verygreatslaughter,till they were consumed,that the rest[which] remainedof them enteredinto fencedcities.21And all the peoplereturnedto the campto Joshuaat Makkedahin peace:none movedhis tongueagainst anyof the childrenof Israel.

22Then saidJoshua,Openthe mouthof the cave,and bring outthose fivekingsunto me out of the cave.23And they didso, and brought forththose fivekingsunto him out of the cave,the kingof Jerusalem,the kingof Hebron,the kingof Jarmuth,the kingof Lachish,[and] the kingof Eglon.24And it came to pass, when they brought outthose kingsunto Joshua,that Joshuacalledfor all the menof Israel,and saidunto the captainsof the menof warwhich wentwith him, Come near,putyour feetupon the necksof these kings.And they came near,and puttheir feetupon the necksof them.25And Joshuasaidunto them, Fearnot, nor be dismayed,be strongand of good courage:for thus shall the LORDdoto all your enemiesagainst whom ye fight.26And afterwardJoshuasmotethem, and slewthem, and hangedthem on fivetrees:and they were hangingupon the treesuntil the evening.27And it came to pass at the timeof the going downof the sun,[that] Joshuacommanded,and they took them downoff the trees,and castthem into the cavewherein they had been hid,and laidgreatstonesin the cave'smouth,[which remain] until this veryday.

28And that dayJoshuatookMakkedah,and smoteit with the edgeof the sword,and the kingthereof he utterly destroyed,them, and all the soulsthat [were] therein; he letnone remain:and he didto the kingof Makkedahas he didunto the kingof Jericho.

Joshua Conquers Southern Palestine

29Then Joshuapassedfrom Makkedah,and all Israelwith him, unto Libnah,and foughtagainst Libnah:30And the LORDdeliveredit also, and the kingthereof, into the handof Israel;and he smoteit with the edgeof the sword,and all the soulsthat [were] therein; he letnone remainin it; but didunto the kingthereof as he didunto the kingof Jericho.

31And Joshuapassedfrom Libnah,and all Israelwith him, unto Lachish,and encampedagainst it, and foughtagainst it:32And the LORDdeliveredLachishinto the handof Israel,which tookit on the secondday,and smoteit with the edgeof the sword,and all the soulsthat [were] therein, according to all that he had doneto Libnah.

33Then Horamkingof Gezercame upto helpLachish;and Joshuasmotehim and his people,until he had lefthim none remaining.

34And from LachishJoshuapassedunto Eglon,and all Israelwith him; and they encampedagainst it, and foughtagainst it:35And they tookit on that day,and smoteit with the edgeof the sword,and all the soulsthat [were] therein he utterly destroyedthat day,according to all that he had doneto Lachish.

36And Joshuawent upfrom Eglon,and all Israelwith him, unto Hebron;and they foughtagainst it:37And they tookit, and smoteit with the edgeof the sword,and the kingthereof, and all the citiesthereof, and all the soulsthat [were] therein; he leftnone remaining,according to all that he had doneto Eglon;but destroyedit utterly, and all the soulsthat [were] therein.

38And Joshuareturned,and all Israelwith him, to Debir;and foughtagainst it:39And he tookit, and the kingthereof, and all the citiesthereof; and they smotethem with the edgeof the sword,and utterly destroyedall the soulsthat [were] therein; he leftnone remaining:as he had doneto Hebron,so he didto Debir,and to the kingthereof; as he had donealso to Libnah,and to her king.

40So Joshuasmoteall the countryof the hills,and of the south,and of the vale,and of the springs,and all their kings:he leftnone remaining,but utterly destroyedall that breathed,as the LORDGodof Israelcommanded.41And Joshuasmotethem from Kadeshbarneaeven unto Gaza,and all the countryof Goshen,even unto Gibeon.42And all these kingsand their landdid Joshuatakeat onetime,because the LORDGodof Israelfoughtfor Israel.43And Joshuareturned,and all Israelwith him, unto the campto Gilgal.
