KJV + Strong's Jonah's Anger at the Lord's Compassion 1But it displeasedJonahexceedingly,and he was very angry.2And he prayedunto the LORD,and said,I praythee, O LORD,[was] not this my saying,when I was yet in my country?Therefore I fledbeforeunto Tarshish:for I knewthat thou [art] a graciousGod,and merciful,slowto anger,and of greatkindness,and repentestthee of the evil.3Therefore now, O LORD,take,I beseech thee, my lifefrom me; for [it is] betterfor me to diethan to live.4Then saidthe LORD,Doest thou wellto be angry? 5So Jonahwent outof the city,and saton the east sideof the city,and there madehim a booth,and satunder it in the shadow,till he might seewhat would become of the city.6And the LORDGodprepareda gourd,and made [it] to come upover Jonah,that it might be a shadowover his head,to deliverhim from his grief.So Jonahwas exceedinggladof the gourd.7But Godprepareda wormwhen the morningrosethe next day,and it smotethe gourdthat it withered.8And it came to pass, when the sundid arise,that Godprepareda vehementeastwind;and the sunbeatupon the headof Jonah,that he fainted,and wishedin himselfto die,and said,[It is] betterfor me to diethan to live. 9And Godsaidto Jonah,Doest thou wellto be angryfor the gourd?And he said,I do wellto be angry,[even] unto death.10Then saidthe LORD,Thou hast had pityon the gourd,for the which thou hast not laboured,neither madest it grow;which came up in a night,and perishedin a night:11And should not I spareNineveh,that greatcity,wherein aremorethan sixscorethousandpersonsthat cannot discernbetween their right handand their left hand;and [also] muchcattle? |
