The Serpent's Deception
(Genesis 7:1-5;Romans 5:12-21;2 Peter 3:1-9)
1Now the serpentwasmore subtilthan any beastof the fieldwhich the LORDGodhad made.And he saidunto the woman,Yea,hath Godsaid,Ye shall not eatof every treeof the garden?2And the womansaidunto the serpent,We may eatof the fruitof the treesof the garden:3But of the fruitof the treewhich [is] in the midstof the garden,Godhath said,Ye shall not eatof it, neither shall ye touchit, lestye die.4And the serpentsaidunto the woman,Ye shall not surelydie:5For Goddoth knowthat in the dayye eatthereof, then your eyesshall be opened,and ye shall be as gods,knowinggoodand evil.6And when the womansawthat the tree[was] goodfor food,and that it[was] pleasantto the eyes,and a treeto be desiredto make [one] wise,she tookof the fruit thereof,and did eat,and gavealsounto her husbandwith her; and he did eat.7And the eyesof them bothwere opened,and theyknewthat they [were] naked;and they sewedfigleavestogether,and made themselvesaprons.
God Arraigns Adam and Eve
8And they heardthe voiceof the LORDGodwalkingin the gardenin the coolof the day:and Adamand his wifehid themselvesfrom the presenceof the LORDGodamongstthe treesof the garden.9And the LORDGodcalledunto Adam,and saidunto him, Where [art] thou?10And he said,I heardthy voicein the garden,and I was afraid,because I[was] naked;and I hid myself.11And he said,Whotoldthee that thou [wast] naked?Hast thou eatenof the tree,whereof I commanded theethat thou shouldest noteat?12And the mansaid,The womanwhom thou gavest[to be] with me,shegaveme of the tree,and I did eat.13And the LORDGodsaidunto the woman,What [is] this [that] thou hast done?And the womansaid,The serpentbeguiled me,and I did eat.
14And the LORDGodsaidunto the serpent,Because thouhast donethis, thou [art] cursedabove all cattle,and above every beastof the field;upon thy bellyshalt thou go,and dustshalt thou eatall the daysof thy life:
15And I will putenmitybetween thee and the woman,and between thy seedand her seed;it shall bruisethy head,and thou shalt bruisehis heel.
The Punishment of Mankind
16Unto the womanhe said,I will greatlymultiplythy sorrowand thy conception;in sorrowthou shalt bring forthchildren;and thy desire[shall be] to thy husband,and he shall ruleover thee.
17And unto Adamhe said,Because thou hast hearkenedunto the voiceof thy wife,and hast eatenof the tree,of whichI commanded thee,saying,Thou shalt not eatof it: cursed[is] the groundfor thy sake; in sorrowshalt thou eat[of] it allthe daysof thy life;
18Thorns alsoand thistlesshall it bring forthto thee; and thou shalt eatthe herbof the field;
19In the sweatof thy faceshalt thou eatbread,tillthou returnunto the ground;for out of it wast thou taken:for dustthou[art], and unto dustshalt thou return.
20And Adamcalledhis wife'snameEve;because she was the motherof all living.
The Expulsion from Paradise
21Unto Adamalso and to his wifedid the LORDGodmakecoatsof skins,and clothed them.
22And the LORDGodsaid,Behold,the manis become as oneof us, to knowgoodand evil:and now, lest he put forthhis hand,and takealso of the treeof life,and eat,and livefor ever:23Therefore the LORDGodsent him forthfrom the gardenof Eden,to tillthe groundfrom whence he was taken.24So he drove outthe man;and he placedat the eastof the gardenof EdenCherubims,and a flamingswordwhich turned every way,to keepthe wayof the treeof life.
