The Death and Burial of Sarah
1And Sarahwas an hundredand sevenand twentyyearsold:[these were] the yearsof the lifeof Sarah.2And Sarahdiedin Kirjatharba;the same [is] Hebronin the landof Canaan:and Abrahamcameto mournfor Sarah,and to weepfor her.3And Abrahamstood upfrom beforehis dead,and spakeunto the sonsof Heth,saying,4I [am] a strangerand a sojournerwith you: giveme a possessionof a buryingplacewith you, that I may burymy deadout of my sight.5And the childrenof HethansweredAbraham,sayingunto him,6Hear us,my lord:thou [art] a mightyprinceamong us:in the choiceof our sepulchresburythy dead;noneof us shall withholdfrom thee his sepulchre,but that thou mayest burythy dead.7And Abrahamstood up,and bowedhimself to the peopleof the land,[even] to the childrenof Heth.8And he communedwith them, saying,If it beyour mindthat I should burymy deadout of my sight;hearme, and intreatfor me to Ephronthe sonof Zohar,9That he may giveme the caveof Machpelah,which he hath, which [is] in the endof his field;for as muchmoneyas it is worthhe shall give itme for a possessionof a buryingplaceamongst you.10And Ephrondweltamongthe childrenof Heth:and Ephronthe HittiteansweredAbrahamin the audienceof the childrenof Heth,[even] of all that went inat the gateof his city,saying,11Nay,my lord,hear me:the fieldgive Ithee, and the cavethat [is] therein, I give itthee; in the presenceof the sonsof my peoplegiveI it thee: burythy dead.12And Abrahambowed downhimself beforethe peopleof the land.13And he spakeunto Ephronin the audienceof the peopleof the land,saying,But if thou [wilt give it], I pray thee,hearme: I will givethee moneyfor the field;take[it] of me, and I will burymy deadthere.14And EphronansweredAbraham,sayingunto him,15My lord,hearkenunto me: the land[is worth] fourhundredshekelsof silver;what [is] that betwixtme and thee? burytherefore thy dead.16And Abrahamhearkenedunto Ephron;and Abrahamweighedto Ephronthe silver,which he had namedin the audienceof the sonsof Heth,fourhundredshekelsof silver,current[money] with the merchant.
17And the fieldof Ephron,which [was] in Machpelah,which [was] beforeMamre,the field,and the cavewhich [was] therein, and all the treesthat [were] in the field,that [were] in all the bordersround about,were made sure18Unto Abrahamfor a possessionin the presenceof the childrenof Heth,before all that went inat the gateof his city.19And afterthis,AbrahamburiedSarahhis wifein the caveof the fieldof MachpelahbeforeMamre:the same [is] Hebronin the landof Canaan.20And the field,and the cavethat [is] therein, were made sureunto Abrahamfor a possessionof a buryingplaceby the sonsof Heth.
