David Plans a Temple

1And it came to pass, when the kingsatin his house,and the LORDhad given him restround aboutfrom all his enemies;2That the kingsaidunto Nathanthe prophet,Seenow, I dwellin an houseof cedar,but the arkof Goddwellethwithincurtains.3And Nathansaidto the king,Go,doall that [is] in thine heart;for the LORD[is] with thee.

God's Covenant with David

(1 Chronicles 17:1-15)

4And it came to pass that night,that the wordof the LORDcame unto Nathan,saying,5Goand tellmy servantDavid,Thus saiththe LORD,Shalt thou buildme an housefor me to dwell in?6Whereas I have not dweltin [any] housesince the timethat I brought upthe childrenof Israelout of Egypt,even to this day,but have walkedin a tentand in a tabernacle.7In all [the places] wherein I have walkedwith all the childrenof IsraelspakeI a wordwith anyof the tribesof Israel,whom I commandedto feedmy peopleIsrael,saying,Why buildye not me an houseof cedar?

8Now therefore so shalt thou sayunto my servantDavid,Thus saiththe LORDof hosts,I tookthee from the sheepcote,from followingthe sheep,to be rulerover my people,over Israel:9And I was with thee whithersoever thou wentest,and have cut offall thine enemiesout of thy sight,and have madethee a greatname,like unto the nameof the great[men] that [are] in the earth.10Moreover I will appointa placefor my peopleIsrael,and will plantthem, that they may dwellin a place of their own, and moveno more; neither shall the childrenof wickednessafflictthem any more,as beforetime,11And as since the timethat I commandedjudges[to be] over my peopleIsrael,and have caused thee to restfrom all thine enemies.Also the LORDtelleththee that he will makethee an house.12And when thy daysbe fulfilled,and thou shalt sleepwith thy fathers,I will set upthy seedafterthee, which shall proceedout of thy bowels,and I will establishhis kingdom.13He shall buildan housefor my name,and I will stablishthe throneof his kingdomforever.14I will be his father,and he shall be my son.If he commit iniquity,I will chastenhim with the rodof men,and with the stripesof the childrenof men:15But my mercyshall not depart awayfrom him, as I took[it] from Saul,whom I put awaybeforethee.16And thine houseand thy kingdomshall be establishedforeverbeforethee: thy throneshall be establishedforever.17According to all these words,and according to all this vision,so did Nathanspeakunto David.

David's Prayer of Thanksgiving

(1 Chronicles 17:16-27)

18Then wentkingDavidin, and satbeforethe LORD,and he said,Who [am] I, O LordGOD?and what [is] my house,that thou hast broughtme hitherto?19And this was yet a small thingin thy sight,O LordGOD;but thou hast spokenalso of thy servant'shousefor a great while to come.And [is] this the mannerof man,O LordGOD?20And what canDavidsaymoreunto thee? for thou, LordGOD,knowestthy servant.21For thy word'ssake, and according to thine own heart,hast thou doneall these great things,to make thy servantknow[them].22Wherefore thou art great,O LORDGod:for [there is] none like thee, neither [is there any] Godbesidethee, according to all that we have heardwith our ears.23And what onenationin the earth[is] like thy people,[even] like Israel,whom Godwentto redeemfor a peopleto himself, and to makehim a name,and to dofor you great thingsand terrible,for thy land,beforethy people,which thou redeemedstto thee from Egypt,[from] the nationsand their gods?24For thou hast confirmedto thyself thy peopleIsrael[to be] a peopleunto thee forever:and thou, LORD,art becometheir God.25And now, O LORDGod,the wordthat thou hast spokenconcerning thy servant,and concerning his house,establish[it] forever,and doas thou hast said.26And let thy namebe magnifiedforever,saying,The LORDof hosts[is] the Godover Israel:and let the houseof thy servantDavidbe establishedbeforethee.27For thou, O LORDof hosts,Godof Israel,hast revealedto thy servant,saying,I will buildthee an house:therefore hath thy servantfoundin his heartto praythis prayerunto thee.28And now, O LordGOD,thou [art] that God,and thy wordsbe TRUE,and thou hast promisedthis goodnessunto thy servant:29Therefore now let it pleasethee to blessthe houseof thy servant,that it may continue for everbeforethee: for thou, O LordGOD,hast spoken[it]: and with thy blessinglet the houseof thy servantbe blessedfor ever.
