Jonathan's Plan

1Now it came to pass upon a day, that Jonathanthe sonof Saulsaidunto the young manthat barehis armour,Come, and let us go overto the Philistines'garrison, that [is] on the other side. But he toldnot his father.2And Saultarriedin the uttermostpart of Gibeahunder a pomegranate treewhich [is] in Migron:and the peoplethat [were] with him [were] about sixhundredmen;3And Ahiah, the sonof Ahitub,Ichabod'sbrother, the sonof Phinehas, the sonof Eli,the LORD'Spriestin Shiloh, wearingan ephod. And the peopleknewnot that Jonathanwas gone.4And between the passages,by which Jonathansoughtto go overunto the Philistines'garrison,[there was] a sharprockon the one side, and a sharprockon the other side:and the nameof the one[was] Bozez, and the nameof the otherSeneh.5The forefrontof the one[was] situatenorthwardover againstMichmash, and the othersouthwardover againstGibeah.

6And Jonathansaidto the young manthat barehis armour,Come, and let us go overunto the garrisonof these uncircumcised:it may be that the LORDwill workfor us: for [there is] no restraintto the LORDto saveby manyor by few.7And his armourbearersaidunto him, Doall that [is] in thine heart:turnthee; behold, I [am] with thee according to thy heart.8Then saidJonathan,Behold, we will pass overunto [these] men,and we will discoverourselves unto them.9If they saythus unto us, Tarryuntil we cometo you; then we will stand stillin our place, and will not go upunto them.10But if they saythus, Come upunto us; then we will go up:for the LORDhath deliveredthem into our hand:and this [shall be] a signunto us.11And bothof them discoveredthemselves unto the garrisonof the Philistines:and the Philistinessaid,Behold, the Hebrewscome forthout of the holeswhere they had hidthemselves.12And the menof the garrisonansweredJonathanand his armourbearer, and said,Come upto us, and we will shewyou a thing. And Jonathansaidunto his armourbearer,Come upafterme: for the LORDhath deliveredthem into the handof Israel.13And Jonathanclimbed upupon his handsand upon his feet, and his armourbearerafterhim: and they fellbeforeJonathan;and his armourbearerslewafterhim.14And that firstslaughter, which Jonathanand his armourbearermade, was about twentymen, within as it were an halfacreof land,[which] a yoke[of oxen might plow].

Israel Defeats the Philistines

15And there was tremblingin the host,in the field, and among all the people:the garrison, and the spoilers, they also trembled, and the earthquaked:so it was a very greattrembling.

16And the watchmenof Saulin Gibeahof Benjaminlooked;and, behold, the multitudemelted away, and they wenton beating down[one another].17Then saidSaulunto the peoplethat [were] with him, Numbernow, and seewho is gonefrom us. And when they had numbered, behold, Jonathanand his armourbearer[were] not [there].18And Saulsaidunto Ahiah,Bring hitherthe arkof God.For the arkof Godwas at that timewith the childrenof Israel.19And it came to pass, while Saultalkedunto the priest, that the noisethat [was] in the hostof the Philistineswentonand increased:and Saulsaidunto the priest,Withdrawthine hand.20And Sauland all the peoplethat [were] with him assembledthemselves, and they cameto the battle:and, behold, every man'sswordwas against his fellow,[and there was] a verygreatdiscomfiture.21Moreover the Hebrews[that] were with the Philistinesbeforethat time, which went upwith them into the camp[from the country] round about, even they also [turned] to be with the Israelitesthat [were] with Sauland Jonathan.22Likewise all the menof Israelwhich had hidthemselves in mountEphraim,[when] they heardthat the Philistinesfled, even they also followed hardafterthem in the battle.23So the LORDsavedIsraelthat day:and the battlepassed overunto Bethaven.

Jonathan Eats the Honey

24And the menof Israelwere distressedthat day:for Saulhad adjuredthe people, saying,Cursed[be] the manthat eateth[any] fooduntil evening, that I may be avengedon mine enemies. So none of the peopletasted[any] food.25And all [they of] the landcameto a wood;and there was honeyuponthe ground.26And when the peoplewere comeinto the wood, behold, the honeydropped;but no man puthis handto his mouth:for the peoplefearedthe oath.27But Jonathanheardnot when his fatherchargedthe peoplewith the oath:wherefore he put forththe endof the rodthat [was] in his hand, and dippedit in an honeycomb, and puthis handto his mouth;and his eyeswere enlightened.28Then answeredoneof the people, and said,Thy fatherstraitlychargedthe peoplewith an oath, saying,Cursed[be] the manthat eateth[any] foodthis day.And the peoplewere faint.29Then saidJonathan,My fatherhath troubledthe land:see,I pray you, how mine eyeshave been enlightened, because I tasteda littleof this honey.30How much more,if haplythe peoplehad eatenfreelyto dayof the spoilof their enemieswhich they found?for had there not been now a much greaterslaughteramong the Philistines?

31And they smotethe Philistinesthat dayfrom Michmashto Aijalon:and the peoplewere veryfaint.32And the peopleflewupon the spoil, and tooksheep, and oxen, and calves, and slew[them] on the ground:and the peopledid eat[them] with the blood.33Then they toldSaul, saying,Behold, the peoplesinagainst the LORD,in that they eatwith the blood. And he said,Ye have transgressed:rolla greatstoneunto me this day.34And Saulsaid,Disperseyourselves among the people, and sayunto them, Bring me hitherevery manhis ox,and every manhis sheep, and slay[them] here, and eat;and sinnot against the LORDin eatingwith the blood. And all the peoplebroughtevery manhis oxwith himthat night, and slew[them] there.35And Saulbuiltan altarunto the LORD:the same was the firstaltarthat he builtunto the LORD.

36And Saulsaid,Let us go downafterthe Philistinesby night, and spoilthem until the morninglight, and let us not leavea manof them. And they said,Dowhatsoever seemethgoodunto thee. Then saidthe priest,Let us draw nearhitherunto God.

The People Save Jonathan

37And Saulaskedcounsel of God,Shall I go downafterthe Philistines?wilt thou deliverthem into the handof Israel? But he answeredhim not that day.38And Saulsaid,Draw ye nearhither, all the chiefof the people:and knowand seewhereinthis sinhath been this day.39For, [as] the LORDliveth, which savethIsrael, though it bein Jonathanmy son,he shall surelydie. But [there was] not a man among all the people[that] answeredhim.40Then saidhe unto all Israel,Be ye on oneside, and I and Jonathanmy sonwill be on the otherside. And the peoplesaidunto Saul,Dowhat seemethgoodunto thee.41Therefore Saulsaidunto the LORDGodof Israel,Givea perfect[lot]. And Sauland Jonathanwere taken:but the peopleescaped.42And Saulsaid,Cast[lots] between me and Jonathanmy son.And Jonathanwas taken.

43Then Saulsaidto Jonathan,Tellme what thou hast done. And Jonathantoldhim, and said,I did buttastea littlehoneywith the endof the rodthat [was] in mine hand,[and], lo,I must die.44And Saulanswered,Goddo soand more also:for thou shalt surelydie,Jonathan.45And the peoplesaidunto Saul,Shall Jonathandie, who hath wroughtthis greatsalvationin Israel?God forbid:[as] the LORDliveth, there shall not one hairof his headfallto the ground;for he hath wroughtwith Godthis day.So the peoplerescuedJonathan, that he diednot.46Then Saulwent upfrom followingthe Philistines:and the Philistineswentto their own place.

Saul's Victories

47So Saultookthe kingdomover Israel, and foughtagainst all his enemieson every side, against Moab, and against the childrenof Ammon, and against Edom, and against the kingsof Zobah, and against the Philistines:and whithersoever he turnedhimself, he vexed[them].48And he gatheredan host, and smotethe Amalekites, and deliveredIsraelout of the handsof them that spoiledthem.

Saul's Family

49Now the sonsof Saulwere Jonathan, and Ishui, and Melchishua:and the namesof his twodaughters[were these]; the nameof the firstbornMerab, and the nameof the youngerMichal:50And the nameof Saul'swife[was] Ahinoam, the daughterof Ahimaaz:and the nameof the captainof his host[was] Abner, the sonof Ner,Saul'suncle.51And Kish[was] the fatherof Saul;and Nerthe fatherof Abner[was] the sonof Abiel.

52And there was sorewaragainst the Philistinesall the daysof Saul:and when Saulsawany strongman,or any valiantman,he tookhim unto him.
