Jesus Before Pilate

(Matthew 27:11-14;John 18:28-40)

1Andthe wholemultitudeof themarose,and ledhimuntoPilate.2Andthey beganto accusehim,saying,We foundthis[fellow] pervertingthe nation,andforbiddingto givetributeto Caesar,sayingthat he himselfisChrista King.3AndPilateaskedhim,saying,Artthouthe Kingof the Jews?Andhe answeredhimand said,Thousayest[it].4ThensaidPilatetothe chief priestsand[to] the people,I findnofaultinthisman.5Andthey were the more fierce,saying,He stirreth upthe people,teachingthroughoutallJewry,beginningfromGalileetothis place.

6WhenPilateheardof Galilee,he askedwhetherthe manwerea Galilaean.

Jesus Before Herod

7Andas soon as he knewthathe belongeduntoHerod'sjurisdiction,he senthimtoHerod,whohimselfalsowasatJerusalematthattime.

8Andwhen HerodsawJesus,he was exceedingglad:forhe wasdesirousto seehimofa long[season], becausehe had heardmany thingsofhim;andhe hopedto have seensomemiracledonebyhim.9Thenhe questionedwith himinmanywords;butheansweredhimnothing.10Andthe chief priestsandscribesstoodand vehementlyaccusedhim.11AndHerodwithhismen of warsethimat nought,andmocked[him], and arrayedhimin a gorgeousrobe,and senthimagainto Pilate.12Andthe samedayPilateandHerodwere madefriendstogether:forbeforethey wereatenmitybetweenthemselves.

The Crowd Chooses Barabbas

(Matthew 27:15-23;Mark 15:6-11)

13AndPilate,when he had called togetherthe chief priestsandthe rulersandthe people,14Saiduntothem,Ye have broughtthismanunto me,asone that perverteththe people:and,behold,I,having examined[him] beforeyou,have foundnofaultinthismantouching those thingswhereofye accusehim:15No,nor yetHerod:forI sentyoutohim;and,lo,nothingworthyof deathisdoneunto him.16I willthereforechastisehim,and release[him].17(Forof necessityhe mustreleaseoneunto thematthe feast.)

18Andthey cried outall at once,saying,Away withthis[man], andreleaseunto usBarabbas:19(Whofora certainseditionmadeinthe city,andfor murder,was castintoprison.)20Pilatetherefore,willingto releaseJesus,spakeagainto them.21Butthey cried,saying,Crucify[him], crucifyhim.22Andhe saiduntothemthe third time,Why,whatevilhathhedone?I have foundnocauseof deathinhim:I willthereforechastisehim,and let [him] go.23Andthey were instantwith loudvoices,requiringthat hemight be crucified.Andthe voicesof themandof the chief priestsprevailed.24AndPilategave sentencethat it should be astheyrequired.25Andhe releasedunto themhim that forseditionandmurderwas castintoprison,whomthey had desired;buthe deliveredJesusto theirwill.

The Crucifixion

(Psalm 69:1-36;Matthew 27:32-44;Mark 15:21-32;John 19:16-27)

26Andasthey ledhimaway,they laid hold upononeSimon,a Cyrenian,comingout ofthe country,and onhimthey laidthe cross,that he might bear[it] afterJesus.

27Andthere followedhima greatcompanyof people,andof women,whichalsobewailedandlamentedhim.28ButJesusturninguntothemsaid,Daughtersof Jerusalem,weepnotforme,butweepforyourselves,andforyourchildren.29For,behold,the daysare coming,inthe whichthey shall say,Blessed[are] the barren,andthe wombsthatneverbare,andthe papswhichnevergave suck.30Thenshall they beginto sayto the mountains,Fallonus;andto the hills,Coverus.31Forifthey dothese thingsina greentree,whatshall be doneinthe dry?

32Andthere were alsotwoother,malefactors,ledwithhimto be put to death.

33Andwhenthey were cometothe place,whichis calledCalvary,therethey crucifiedhim,andthe malefactors,oneonthe right hand,andthe otheronthe left.34ThensaidJesus,Father,forgivethem;forthey knownotwhatthey do.Andthey partedhisraiment,and castlots.35Andthe peoplestoodbeholding.Andthe rulersalsowiththemderided[him], saying,He savedothers;let him savehimself,ifhebeChrist,the chosenof God.36Andthe soldiersalsomockedhim,comingto him, andofferinghimvinegar,37Andsaying,Ifthoubethe kingof the Jews,savethyself.38Anda superscriptionalsowaswrittenoverhimin lettersof Greek,andLatin,andHebrew,THISISTHE KINGOF THE JEWS.

39Andoneof the malefactorswhich were hangedrailedon him,saying,IfthoubeChrist,savethyselfandus.40Butthe otheransweringrebukedhim,saying,DostnotthoufearGod,seeingthou artinthe samecondemnation?41Andweindeedjustly;forwe receivethe due rewardof ourdeeds:butthis manhath donenothingamiss.42Andhe saidunto Jesus,Lord,remembermewhenthou comestintothykingdom.43AndJesussaidunto him,VerilyI sayunto thee,To dayshalt thou bewithmeinparadise.

The Death of Jesus

(Psalm 22:1-31;Matthew 27:45-56;Mark 15:33-41;John 19:28-30)

44Andit wasaboutthe sixthhour,andthere wasa darknessoverallthe earthuntilthe ninthhour.45Andthe sunwas darkened,andthe veilof the templewas rentin the midst.46Andwhen Jesushad criedwith a loudvoice,he said,Father,intothyhandsI commendmyspirit:andhaving saidthus,he gave up the ghost.47Nowwhen the centurionsawwhat was done,he glorifiedGod,saying,Certainlythiswasa righteousman.48Andallthe peoplethat came togethertothatsight,beholdingthe things which were done,smotetheirbreasts,and returned.49Andallhisacquaintance,andthe womenthat followedhimfromGalilee,stoodafar off,beholdingthese things.

The Burial of Jesus

(Isaiah 53:9-12;Matthew 27:57-61;Mark 15:42-47;John 19:38-42)

50And,behold,[there was] a mannamedJoseph,a counsellor;[and he was] a goodman,anda just:51(The samehadnotconsentedto the counselanddeedof them;) [he was] ofArimathaea,a cityof the Jews:whoalsohimselfwaited forthe kingdomof God.52This[man] wentunto Pilate,and beggedthe bodyof Jesus.53Andhe tookitdown,and wrappeditin linen,andlaiditina sepulchrethat was hewn in stone,whereinnevermanbeforewaslaid.54Andthat daywasthe preparation,andthe sabbathdrew on.55Andthe womenalso,whichcamewith himfromGalilee,followed after,and beheldthe sepulchre,andhowhisbodywas laid.56And they returned,andpreparedspicesandointments;andrestedthe sabbath dayaccordingto the commandment.
