A Call to Rebuild the Temple

(Ezra 5:1-5)

1In the secondyearof Dariusthe king,in the sixthmonth,in the firstdayof the month,came the wordof the LORDbyHaggaithe prophetunto Zerubbabelthe sonof Shealtiel,governorof Judah,and to Joshuathe sonof Josedech,the highpriest,saying,2Thus speakeththe LORDof hosts,saying,This peoplesay,The timeis not come,the timethat the LORD'Shouseshould be built.3Then came the wordof the LORDbyHaggaithe prophet,saying,4[Is it] timefor you, O ye, to dwellin your cieledhouses,and this house[lie] waste?5Now therefore thus saiththe LORDof hosts;Consideryour ways.6Ye have sownmuch,and bringin little;ye eat,but ye have not enough;ye drink,but ye are not filled with drink;ye clotheyou, but there is none warm;and he that earneth wagesearneth wages[to put it] into a bagwith holes.

7Thus saiththe LORDof hosts;Consideryour ways.8Go upto the mountain,and bringwood,and buildthe house;and I will take pleasurein it, and I will be glorified,saiththe LORD.9Ye lookedfor much,and, lo, [it came] to little;and when ye brought[it] home,I did blowupon it. Why? saiththe LORDof hosts.Becauseof mine housethat [is] waste,and ye runevery manunto his own house.10Therefore the heavenover you is stayedfrom dew,and the earthis stayed[from] her fruit.11And I calledfor a droughtupon the land,and upon the mountains,and upon the corn,and upon the new wine,and upon the oil,and upon [that] which the groundbringeth forth,and upon men,and upon cattle,and upon all the labourof the hands.

The People Obey

12Then Zerubbabelthe sonof Shealtiel,and Joshuathe sonof Josedech,the highpriest,with all the remnantof the people,obeyedthe voiceof the LORDtheir God,and the wordsof Haggaithe prophet,as the LORDtheir Godhad senthim, and the peopledid fearbeforethe LORD.13Then spakeHaggaithe LORD'Smessengerin the LORD'Smessageunto the people,saying,I [am] with you, saiththe LORD.14And the LORDstirred upthe spiritof Zerubbabelthe sonof Shealtiel,governorof Judah,and the spiritof Joshuathe sonof Josedech,the highpriest,and the spiritof all the remnantof the people;and they cameand didworkin the houseof the LORDof hosts,their God,15In the fourand twentiethdayof the sixthmonth,in the secondyearof Dariusthe king.
