The Holy Spirit at Pentecost

1Andwhenthe dayof Pentecostwas fully come,they wereallwith one accordinone place.2Andsuddenlythere camea soundfromheavenasof a rushingmightywind,andit filledallthe housewherethey weresitting.3Andthere appearedunto themcloventongueslike asof fire,andit satuponeachof them.4Andthey wereallfilledwith the HolyGhost,andbeganto speak withothertongues,asthe Spiritgavethemutterance.
5Andthere weredwellingatJerusalemJews,devoutmen,out ofeverynationunderheaven.6Nowwhen thiswasnoised abroad,the multitudecame together,andwere confounded,becausethat everymanheardthemspeakin his ownlanguage.7Andthey wereallamazedandmarvelled,sayingone to another,Behold,arenotallthesewhichspeakGalilaeans?8Andhowhearweeveryman in ourowntongue,whereinwe were born?9Parthians,andMedes,andElamites,andthe dwellersin Mesopotamia,andin Judaea,andCappadocia,in Pontus,andAsia,10<5037> Phrygia,andPamphylia,in Egypt,andin the partsof LibyaaboutCyrene,andstrangersof Rome,Jewsandproselytes,11CretesandArabians,we do hearthemspeakin ourtonguesthe wonderful worksof God.12Andthey wereallamazed,andwere in doubt,sayingonetoanother,Whatmeaneththis?13<1161> Othersmockingsaid,These men arefullof new wine.
Peter Preaches to the Crowd
14ButPeter,standing upwiththe eleven,lifted uphisvoice,andsaidunto them,Ye menof Judaea,andall[ye] that dwellat Jerusalem,bethisknownunto you,andhearkento mywords:15Forthesearenotdrunken,asyesuppose,seeingit is[but] the thirdhourof the day.16Butthisisthat which was spokenbythe prophetJoel;
17Andit shall come to passinthe lastdays,saithGod,I will pour outofmySpirituponallflesh:andyoursonsandyourdaughtersshall prophesy,andyouryoung menshall seevisions,andyourold menshall dreamdreams:
18AndonmyservantsandonmyhandmaidensI will pour outinthosedaysofmySpirit;andthey shall prophesy:
19AndI will shewwondersinheavenabove,andsignsinthe earthbeneath;blood,andfire,andvapourof smoke:
20The sunshall be turnedintodarkness,andthe moonintoblood,beforethat greatandnotabledayof the Lordcome:
21Andit shall come to pass,[that] whosoevershall call onthe nameof the Lordshall be saved.
22Ye menof Israel,hearthesewords;Jesusof Nazareth,a manapprovedofGodamongyouby miraclesandwondersandsigns,whichGoddidbyhiminthe midstof you,asye yourselvesalsoknow:23Him,being deliveredby the determinatecounselandforeknowledgeof God,ye have taken,and bywickedhandshave crucifiedand slain:24WhomGodhath raised up,having loosedthe painsof death:becauseit wasnotpossiblethat heshould be holdenofit.
25ForDavidspeakethconcerninghim,I foresawthe Lordalwaysbeforemyface, forhe isonmyright hand,thatI shouldnotbe moved:
26Thereforedidmyheartrejoice,andmytonguewas glad;moreoveralsomyfleshshall restinhope:
27Becausethou wiltnotleavemysoulinhell,neitherwilt thou sufferthineHoly Oneto seecorruption.
28Thou hast made knownto methe waysof life;thou shalt makemefullof joywiththycountenance.
29Men[and] brethren,letmefreelyspeakuntoyouofthe patriarchDavid,thathe isbothdeadandburied,andhissepulchreiswithusuntothisday.30Thereforebeinga prophet,andknowingthatGodhad swornwith an oathto him,that ofthe fruitof hisloins,according tothe flesh,he would raise upChristto sitonhisthrone;31He seeing this beforespakeofthe resurrectionof Christ,thathissoulwasnotleftinhell,neitherhisfleshdid seecorruption.32ThisJesushathGodraised up,whereofweallarewitnesses.33Thereforebeingby the right handof Godexalted,andhaving receivedofthe Fatherthe promiseof the HolyGhost,he hath shed forththis,whichyenowseeandhear.
34ForDavidis notascendedintothe heavens:buthe saithhimself,The LORDsaidunto myLord,Sit thouonmyright hand,
35UntilI makethyfoesthyfootstool.36Thereforeletallthe houseof Israelknowassuredly,thatGodhath madethat sameJesus,whomyehave crucified,bothLordandChrist.
Three Thousand Believe
37Nowwhen they heard[this], they were prickedin their heart,andsaiduntoPeterandto the restof the apostles,Men[and] brethren,whatshall we do?38ThenPetersaiduntothem,Repent,andbe baptizedevery oneof youinthe nameof JesusChristforthe remissionof sins,andye shall receivethe giftof the HolyGhost.39Forthe promiseisunto you,andto yourchildren,andto allthat are afar off,[even] as many asthe LordourGodshall call.40Andwith manyotherwordsdid he testifyandexhort,saying,Save yourselvesfromthisuntowardgeneration.41Thenthey that gladlyreceivedhiswordwere baptized:andthe samedaythere were added[unto them] aboutthree thousandsouls.
The Fellowship of Believers
(Acts 4:32-37)
42Andthey continuedstedfastlyin the apostles'doctrineandfellowship,andin breakingof bread,andin prayers.
43Andfearcame uponeverysoul:andmanywondersandsignswere donebythe apostles.44Andallthat believedweretogether,andhadall thingscommon;45Andsoldtheir possessionsandgoods,andpartedthemto all[men], asevery manhadneed.46Andthey, continuingdailywith one accordinthe temple,andbreakingbreadfromhouse to house,did eattheir meatwithgladnessandsinglenessof heart,47PraisingGod,andhavingfavourwithallthe people.Andthe Lordaddedto the churchdailysuch as should be saved.
