Absalom's Return to Jerusalem

1Now Joabthe sonof Zeruiahperceivedthat the king'sheart[was] toward Absalom.2And Joabsentto Tekoah, and fetchedthence a wisewoman, and saidunto her, I pray thee, feign thyself to be a mourner, and put onnow mourningapparel, and anointnot thyself with oil,but be as a womanthat had a longtimemournedfor the dead:3And cometo the king, and speakon this mannerunto him. So Joabputthe wordsin her mouth.

4And when the womanof Tekoahspaketo the king, she fellon her faceto the ground, and did obeisance, and said,Help,O king.5And the kingsaidunto her, What aileth thee? And she answered,I [am] indeeda widowwoman, and mine husbandis dead.6And thy handmaidhad twosons, and they twostrove togetherin the field, and [there was] none to partthem, but the onesmotethe other, and slewhim.7And, behold, the whole familyis risenagainst thine handmaid, and they said,Deliverhim that smotehis brother, that we may killhim, for the lifeof his brotherwhom he slew;and we will destroythe heiralso: and so they shall quenchmy coalwhich is left, and shall not leaveto my husband[neither] namenor remainderuponthe earth.

8And the kingsaidunto the woman,Goto thine house, and I will give chargeconcerning thee.9And the womanof Tekoahsaidunto the king,My lord,O king, the iniquity[be] on me, and on my father'shouse:and the kingand his throne[be] guiltless.10And the kingsaid,Whosoever saith[ought] unto thee, bringhim to me, and he shall not touchthee any more.11Then saidshe, I pray thee, let the kingrememberthe LORDthy God,that thou wouldest not suffer the revengersof bloodto destroyany more, lest they destroymy son.And he said,[As] the LORDliveth, there shall not one hairof thy sonfallto the earth.

12Then the womansaid,Let thine handmaid,I pray thee, speak[one] wordunto my lordthe king. And he said,Say on.13And the womansaid,Wherefore then hast thou thoughtsuch a thing against the peopleof God?for the kingdoth speakthis thingas one which is faulty,in that the kingdoth not fetch home againhis banished.14For we must needsdie, and [are] as waterspilton the ground, which cannot be gathered up again;neither doth Godrespect[any] person:yet doth he devisemeans, that his banishedbe not expelledfrom him.15Now therefore that I am cometo speakof this thingunto my lordthe king,[it is] because the peoplehave made me afraid:and thy handmaidsaid,I will now speakunto the king;it may be that the kingwill performthe requestof his handmaid.16For the kingwill hear,to deliverhis handmaidout of the handof the man[that would] destroyme and my sontogetherout of the inheritanceof God.17Then thine handmaidsaid,The wordof my lordthe kingshall now be comfortable:for as an angelof God,so [is] my lordthe kingto discerngoodand bad:therefore the LORDthy Godwill be with thee.

18Then the kingansweredand saidunto the woman,Hidenot from me, I pray thee, the thingthat I shall askthee. And the womansaid,Let my lordthe kingnow speak.19And the kingsaid,[Is not] the handof Joabwith thee in all this? And the womanansweredand said,[As] thy soulliveth,my lordthe king, nonecanturn to the right handor to the leftfrom ought that my lordthe kinghath spoken:for thy servantJoab,he bademe, and he putall these wordsin the mouthof thine handmaid:20Tofetch aboutthis formof speechhath thy servantJoabdonethis thing:and my lord[is] wise, according to the wisdomof an angelof God,to knowall [things] that [are] in the earth.

21And the kingsaidunto Joab,Behold now, I have donethis thing:gotherefore, bringthe young manAbsalomagain.22And Joabfellto the groundon his face, and bowedhimself, and thankedthe king:and Joabsaid,To daythy servantknoweththat I have foundgracein thy sight,my lord,O king,in that the kinghath fulfilledthe requestof his servant.23So Joabaroseand wentto Geshur, and broughtAbsalomto Jerusalem.24And the kingsaid,Let him turnto his own house, and let him not seemy face.So Absalomreturnedto his own house, and sawnot the king'sface.

25But in all Israelthere was noneto be so muchpraisedas Absalomfor his beauty:from the soleof his footeven to the crown of his headthere was no blemishin him.26And when he polledhis head,(for it was at every year'sendthat he polled[it]: because [the hair] was heavyon him, therefore he polledit:) he weighedthe hairof his headat two hundredshekelsafter the king'sweight.27And unto Absalomthere were bornthreesons, and onedaughter, whose name[was] Tamar:she was a womanof a faircountenance.

Absalom Reconciled to David

28So Absalomdwelttwo fullyearsin Jerusalem, and sawnot the king'sface.29Therefore Absalomsentfor Joab,to have senthim to the king;but he wouldnot cometo him: and when he sent againthe second time,he wouldnot come.30Therefore he saidunto his servants,See,Joab'sfieldis nearmine, and he hath barleythere; goand setit on fire. And Absalom'sservantssetthe fieldon fire.31Then Joabarose, and cameto Absalomunto [his] house, and saidunto him, Wherefore have thy servantssetmy fieldon fire?32And AbsalomansweredJoab,Behold, I sentunto thee, saying,Comehither, that I may sendthee to the king,to say,Wherefore am I comefrom Geshur?[it had been] goodfor me [to have been] there still: now therefore let me seethe king'sface;and if there be[any] iniquityin me, let him killme.33So Joabcameto the king, and toldhim: and when he had calledfor Absalom,he cameto the king, and bowedhimself on his faceto the groundbeforethe king:and the kingkissedAbsalom.
