Nathan Rebukes David

(Psalm 51:1-19)

1And the LORDsentNathanunto David. And he cameunto him, and saidunto him, There were twomenin onecity;the onerich, and the otherpoor.

2The rich[man] had exceedingmanyflocksand herds:

3But the poor[man] had nothing, save onelittleewe lamb, which he had boughtand nourished up:and it grew uptogetherwith him, and with his children;it did eatof his own meat, and drankof his own cup,and layin his bosom, and was unto him as a daughter.

4And there camea travellerunto the richman, and he sparedto takeof his own flockand of his own herd,to dressfor the wayfaring manthat was comeunto him; but tookthe poorman'slamb, and dressedit for the manthat was cometo him.

5And David'sangerwas greatlykindledagainst the man;and he saidto Nathan,[As] the LORDliveth, the manthat hath donethis [thing] shall surelydie:6And he shall restorethe lambfourfold, becausehe didthis thing, and becausehe had no pity.

7And Nathansaidto David,Thou [art] the man. Thus saiththe LORDGodof Israel,I anointedthee kingover Israel, and I deliveredthee out of the handof Saul;8And I gavethee thy master'shouse, and thy master'swivesinto thy bosom, and gavethee the houseof Israeland of Judah;and if [that had been] too little,I would moreover have givenunto thee suchand such things.9Wherefore hast thou despisedthe commandmentof the LORD,to doevilin his sight?thou hast killedUriahthe Hittitewith the sword, and hast takenhis wife[to be] thy wife, and hast slainhim with the swordof the childrenof Ammon.10Now therefore the swordshall neverdepartfrom thine house;becausethou hast despisedme, and hast takenthe wifeof Uriahthe Hittiteto be thy wife.11Thus saiththe LORD,Behold, I will raise upevilagainst thee out of thine own house, and I will takethy wivesbefore thine eyes, and give[them] unto thy neighbour, and he shall liewith thy wivesin the sightof this sun.12For thou didst[it] secretly:but I will dothis thingbefore all Israel, and before the sun.

David's Loss and Repentance

13And Davidsaidunto Nathan,I have sinnedagainst the LORD.And Nathansaidunto David,The LORDalso hath put awaythy sin;thou shalt not die.14Howbeit,because by this deedthou hast givengreat occasionto the enemiesof the LORDto blaspheme, the childalso [that is] bornunto thee shall surelydie.15And Nathandepartedunto his house. And the LORDstruckthe childthat Uriah'swifebareunto David, and it was very sick.16Davidtherefore besoughtGodfor the child;and Davidfasted, and went in,and layall nightupon the earth.17And the eldersof his housearose,[and went] to him, to raise him upfrom the earth:but he wouldnot, neither did he eatbreadwith them.18And it came to pass on the seventhday, that the childdied. And the servantsof Davidfearedto tellhim that the childwas dead:for they said,Behold, while the childwas yet alive,we spakeunto him, and he would not hearkenunto our voice:how will he thenvexhimself,if we tellhim that the childis dead?19But when Davidsawthat his servantswhispered,Davidperceivedthat the childwas dead:therefore Davidsaidunto his servants,Is the childdead? And they said,He is dead.20Then Davidarosefrom the earth, and washed, and anointed[himself], and changedhis apparel, and cameinto the houseof the LORD,and worshipped:then he cameto his own house;and when he required, they setbreadbefore him, and he did eat.

21Then saidhis servantsunto him, What thing[is] this that thou hast done?thou didst fastand weepfor the child,[while it was] alive;but when the childwas dead, thou didst riseand eatbread.22And he said,While the childwas yet alive,I fastedand wept:for I said,Who can tell[whether] GODwill be gracious{08675;02603:08762} to me, that the childmay live?23But now he is dead, wherefore should I fast?canI bring him back again?I shall goto him, but he shall not returnto me.
