KJV + Strong's David and Bathsheba 1And it came to pass, after the yearwas expired,at the timewhen kingsgo forth[to battle], that DavidsentJoab,and his servantswith him, and all Israel;and they destroyedthe childrenof Ammon,and besiegedRabbah.But Davidtarried stillat Jerusalem. 2And it came to pass in an eveningtide,that Davidarosefrom off his bed,and walkedupon the roofof the king'shouse:and from the roofhe sawa womanwashingherself; and the woman[was] verybeautifulto look upon.3And Davidsentand enquiredafter the woman.And [one] said,[Is] not this Bathsheba,the daughterof Eliam,the wifeof Uriahthe Hittite?4And Davidsentmessengers,and tookher; and she came inunto him, and he laywith her; for she was purifiedfrom her uncleanness:and she returnedunto her house.5And the womanconceived,and sentand toldDavid,and said,I [am] with child. 6And Davidsentto Joab,[saying], Sendme Uriahthe Hittite.And JoabsentUriahto David.7And when Uriahwas comeunto him, Daviddemanded[of him] how Joabdid,and how the peopledid,and how the warprospered.8And Davidsaidto Uriah,Go downto thy house,and washthy feet.And Uriahdeparted outof the king'shouse,and there followedhim a mess[of meat] from the king.9But Uriahsleptat the doorof the king'shousewith all the servantsof his lord,and went not downto his house.10And when they had toldDavid,saying,Uriahwent not downunto his house,Davidsaidunto Uriah,Camestthou not from [thy] journey?why [then] didst thou not go downunto thine house?11And Uriahsaidunto David,The ark,and Israel,and Judah,abidein tents;and my lordJoab,and the servantsof my lord,are encampedin the openfields;shall Ithen gointo mine house,to eatand to drink,and to liewith my wife?[as] thou livest,and [as] thy soulliveth,I will not dothis thing.12And Davidsaidto Uriah,Tarryhere to dayalso, and to morrowI will let thee depart.So Uriahabodein Jerusalemthat day,and the morrow.13And when Davidhad calledhim, he did eatand drinkbeforehim; and he made him drunk:and at evenhe went outto lieon his bedwith the servantsof his lord,but went not downto his house. David Arranges Uriah's Death 14And it came to pass in the morning,that Davidwrotea letterto Joab,and sent[it] by the handof Uriah.15And he wrotein the letter,saying,Setye Uriahin the forefrontof the hottestbattle,and retireye from him,that he may be smitten,and die.16And it came to pass, when Joabobservedthe city,that he assignedUriahunto a placewhere he knewthat valiantmen[were].17And the menof the citywent out,and foughtwith Joab:and there fell[some] of the peopleof the servantsof David;and Uriahthe Hittitediedalso.18Then Joabsentand toldDavidall the thingsconcerning the war;19And chargedthe messenger,saying,When thou hast made an endof tellingthe mattersof the warunto the king,20And if so be that the king'swratharise,and he sayunto thee, Wherefore approached ye so nighunto the citywhen ye did fight?knewye not that they would shootfrom the wall?21Who smoteAbimelechthe sonof Jerubbesheth?did not a womancasta pieceof a millstoneupon him from the wall,that he diedin Thebez?why went ye nighthe wall?then saythou, Thy servantUriahthe Hittiteis deadalso. 22So the messengerwent,and cameand shewedDavidall that Joabhad senthim for.23And the messengersaidunto David,Surely the menprevailedagainst us, and came outunto us into the field,and we were upon them even unto the enteringof the gate.24And the shootersshotfrom off the wallupon thy servants;and [some] of the king'sservantsbe dead,and thy servantUriahthe Hittiteis deadalso.25Then Davidsaidunto the messenger,Thus shalt thou sayunto Joab,Let not this thingdispleasethee, for the sworddevourethone as well as another:make thy battlemore strongagainst the city,and overthrowit: and encouragethou him. David Marries Bathsheba 26And when the wifeof Uriahheardthat Uriahher husbandwas dead,she mournedfor her husband.27And when the mourningwas past,Davidsentand fetchedher to his house,and she became his wife,and barehim a son.But the thingthat Davidhad donedispleasedthe LORD. |
