Prophecy and Tongues
1Followafter charity,anddesirespiritual[gifts], butratherthatye may prophesy.2Forhe that speakethin an [unknown] tonguespeakethnotunto men,butunto God:forno manunderstandeth[him]; howbeitin the spirithe speakethmysteries.3Buthe that prophesiethspeakethunto men[to] edification,andexhortation,andcomfort.4He that speakethin an [unknown] tongueedifiethhimself;buthe that prophesiethedifieththe church.5<1161> I wouldthat yeallspakewith tongues,butratherthatye prophesied:forgreater[is] he that prophesieththanhe that speakethwith tongues,excepthe interpret,thatthe churchmay receiveedifying.
6<1161> Now,brethren,ifI comeuntoyouspeakingwith tongues,whatshall I profityou,exceptI shall speakto youeitherbyrevelation,orbyknowledge,orbyprophesying,orbydoctrine?7And eventhings without lifegivingsound,whetherpipeorharp,exceptthey givea distinctionin the sounds,howshall it be knownwhat is pipedorharped?8Forifthe trumpetgivean uncertainsound,whoshall prepare himselftothe battle?9Solikewiseye,exceptye utterbythe tonguewordseasy to be understood,howshall it be knownwhat is spoken?forye shallspeakintothe air.10<1487> There are,it may be,so manykindsof voicesinthe world,andnone of them[is] without signification.11ThereforeifI knownotthe meaningof the voice,I shall beunto him that speaketha barbarian,andhe that speaketh[shall be] a barbarianuntome.12Evensoye,forasmuch asye arezealousof spiritual[gifts], seekthatye may exceltothe edifyingof the church.
13Whereforelet him that speakethin an [unknown] tonguepraythathe may interpret.14ForifI prayin an [unknown] tongue,myspiritprayeth,butmyunderstandingisunfruitful.15Whatis itthen?I will praywith the spirit,andI will praywith the understandingalso:I will singwith the spirit,andI will singwith the understandingalso.16Elsewhenthou shalt blesswith the spirit,howshall he that occupieththe roomof the unlearnedsayAmenatthygiving of thanks,seeinghe understandethnotwhatthou sayest?17Forthouverilygivest thankswell,butthe otherisnotedified.18I thankmyGod,I speakwith tonguesmore thanyeall:19Yetinthe churchI had ratherspeakfivewordswithmyunderstanding,that[by my voice] I might teachothersalso,thanten thousandwordsinan [unknown] tongue.
20Brethren,benotchildrenin understanding:howbeitin malicebe ye children,butin understandingbemen.21Inthe lawit is written,With[men of] other tonguesandotherlipswill I speakunto thispeople;andyet for allthat will theynothearme,saiththe Lord.22Whereforetonguesarefora sign,notto them that believe,butto them that believe not:butprophesying[serveth] notfor them that believe not,butfor them which believe.23Ifthereforethe wholechurchbe come togetherintoone place,andallspeakwith tongues,andthere come in[those that are] unlearned,orunbelievers,will theynotsaythatye are mad?24Butifallprophesy,andthere come inonethat believeth not,or[one] unlearned,he is convincedofall,he is judgedofall:25Andthusarethe secretsof hisheartmademanifest;andsofalling downon[his] facehe will worshipGod,and reportthatGodisinyouof a truth.
Orderly Worship
26Howis itthen,brethren?whenye come together,every oneof youhatha psalm,hatha doctrine,hatha tongue,hatha revelation,hathan interpretation.Letall thingsbe doneuntoedifying.27Ifany manspeakin an [unknown] tongue,[let it be] bytwo,orat the most[by] three,and[that] bycourse;andletoneinterpret.28Butifthere benointerpreter,let him keep silenceinthe church;andlet him speakto himself,andto God.29<1161> Letthe prophetsspeaktwoorthree,andletthe otherjudge.30If[any thing] be revealedto anotherthat sitteth by,letthe firsthold his peace.31Forye mayallprophesyone by one,thatallmay learn,andallmay be comforted.32Andthe spiritsof the prophetsare subjectto the prophets.33ForGodisnot[the author] of confusion,butof peace,asinallchurchesof the saints.
34Letyourwomenkeep silenceinthe churches:forit isnotpermittedunto themto speak;but[they are commanded] to be under obedience,asalsosaiththe law.35Andifthey willlearnany thing,let them asktheirhusbandsathome:forit isa shamefor womento speakinthe church.36What?camethe wordof Godoutfromyou?orcame ituntoyouonly?
37If any manthink himselfto bea prophet,orspiritual,let him acknowledgethatthe thingsthat I writeunto youarethe commandmentsof the Lord.38Butif any manbe ignorant,let him be ignorant.
39Wherefore,brethren,covetto prophesy,andforbidnotto speakwith tongues.40Letall thingsbe donedecentlyandinorder.
